NOT ME?! 😮
Maybe you’re familiar with the story of Robert Johnson who allegedly did a deal with the devil in the 1930’s and became an incredible blues musician almost overnight albeit with a lot of hard work and practice. He influenced Clapton, the Stones, Robert Plant and loads of other people you’ll definitely be aware of. Anyway... I haven’t done a deal with the devil and I’m not asking to be a rock star but I kind of thought that if I gave a large percentage of mental, ph...ysical and emotional energy to running an opticians then I might be spared the inconvenience of needing extra help with near vision as I got older. I’m finding that it doesn’t work like that. Unfortunately, Robert Johnson only lived till he was 27 so never had the problem. I’m grateful to have the problem and I’m in the best place for the solution (even if I have been in denial for a year). If you’re finding that its easier to read your text messages by lifting your specs up and looking under them or you’re holding your phone as far away as possible to read it then you know exactly what I’m talking about. When you can comfortably admit it to yourself and you should do this in your own time...I realise there’s a lot more to getting older than coming to terms with needing help with near vision, but once you deal with it nobody needs to know about the solution. The triumph to remember here is that unlike Robert Johnson we’ve lived long enough to have the problem! I took the opportunity to update my eyewear wardrobe with a Theo and a couple of Lindbergs... It softened the blow somewhat. Nobody you have anything to do with will need to know (if you can manage not to talk about it) so you’ll be able to enjoy “younger” vision and they wont suspect a thing. I was worried that I might not get the hang of it but it’s really dead easy.
What we read is usually below eye level so our eyes naturally look through the lower part of the lens which has the extra power we need for reading. Wearing vari-focals isn’t as bad as I thought. I’m ok with being older than I was but I’d appreciate it if you can keep it to yourself.... I still have that part-time rock star job .... you never know 😎

Now that we seem to have got past the bleak, arctic conditions and are now heading towards summer, the subject of sunglasses and UV protection once again become more important to us.
Nick and I attended an evening Zeiss had invited us to in Leeds not so long ago all about UV PROTECTION… not just for the eyes but any bit of us that we expose to UV rays. It was really interesting and they made a serious subject quite fun with all the technology Z...eiss have at their disposal. The biggest shock for me was the UV damage camera that each of us stood in front of. We got to see the UV damage to our faces that you can’t see just by looking in the mirror. A big message from the evening was obviously “ use sun screen “ but following on from that, highlighting the effect UV has on our eyes and vision.

Book week is upon us again and it tries to encourage children to see the joy in reading. I have to admit that up until a few years ago I hardly ever sat down with a book and allowed myself to enter a world where I could get more familiar with the workings of my imagination. It’s something that connects all the most successful people in the world. The mighty Warren Buffet himself attributes most of his investment win...s to the fact that he spends 8 hours a day reading. The thing about reading is that it makes us stop all the “multi-tasking” we seem to think is really productive. You’re sending an email from your phone whilst you’re having a conversation, checking social media and all the while you’re thinking about how to phrase a reply to that text you received this morning... However, if you pick up a book you’re engrossed in, all the chatter of these many tasks is hushed. All of your attention is given to just one thing. Consequently, your mind and imagination are allowed to run wild and you may find that, during this time, answers to problems and exciting new ideas just appear on the screen of your thinking.
It doesn’t really matter if it’s fact or fiction but find something you can escape into and you’ll experience the benefits of really de-fragging your head. ‪Book Corner Halifax‬ in The Piece Hall is a great place, as is the new library just through the bottom of the Piece Hall. Arguably the most famous rock n roll record ever made and now you can actually wear it on your face!
“This was released five months after lead singer Bon Scott died. The song is a tribute to Scott, and the lyrics, "Forget the hearse 'cause I never die" imply that he will live on forever through his music. With Brian Johnson on lead vocals, the Back In Black album proved that AC/DC could indeed carry on without Scott.
Brian Johnson made quite a statement with this song, quickl...y endearing himself to AC/DC fans and leaving little doubt that the band made the right pick to replace Bon Scott. Johnson had been in a group called Geordie, which Scott saw in 1973. After that show, Scott talked up the Geordie lead singer to his bandmates, and in 1980 when they were looking for a replacement, AC/DC's producer Mutt Lange suggested him. At the time, Johnson was working as a windshield fitter and had recently reunited Geordie.
The album had a black cover with the band's logo on it, which was a tribute to Bon Scott. They didn't want it to feel mournful, however, and needed a title track that captured the essence of their fallen friend. They were certainly not going to do a ballad, so it fell on Brian Johnson to write a lyric that would rock, but also celebrate Scott without being morbid or literal.
Johnson says he wrote "Whatever came into my head," which at the time he thought was nonsense. To the contrary, lines about abusing his nine lives and beating the rap summed up Scott perfectly, and his new bandmates loved it. ”

University of Edinburgh researchers have reported that a higher level of cognitive function is linked to wearing glasses would you believe!? Optometry Today reported that whether or not a person wears spectacles is linked to their mental agility.
