Wonderful work reposted from @saraillamas - #CancerSurvivorsDay . Proud to say that we're going to be collaborating soon! . 🇺🇸 «I have wrestled with death. It is the most unexciting contest you can imagine. It takes place in an impalpable greyness, with nothing underfoot, with nothing around, without spectators, without clamour, without glory, without the great desire of victory, without the great fear of defeat, in a sickly atmostphere of tepid scepticism, without much bel...ief in your own right, and still less in that of your adversary. If such is the form of ultimate wisdom, then life is a greater riddle than some of us think it to be». . A brain abscess is a true medical emergency... . They can spread from other parts of the body through the blood, directly from the sinuses, dental infections and ear infections. They can also develop from open fractures of the skull. . If left untreated they are fatal.... . Here we've got a simple aspiration of the brain abscess, removing as much pus as possible so that we can give a chance for antibiotics to work. . We use a CT scan to guide the needle directly into the abscess, avoiding important structures and minimising damage. We drained 30mls of pus from this one! . Large abscesses often need multiple aspirations. . Hydrocephalus is an important neurosurgical condition. Here's a first hand account! . Reposted from @yoocandoanything - “When I (@shuntedmdphd) was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at four months old, no one knew what to expect. The only treatment option for hydrocephalus is brain surgery. Some feared I would not be able to keep up with my peers, let alone excel. I was valedictorian of my high school class, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology..., and am currently in a Medical Scientist Training Program working on both an MD and PhD. A lot went into my decision to become a doctor and do research, but it really came down to one fact my neurosurgeon told me my junior year of high school, “50% of shunts fail within two years”. I had just found out I needed another brain surgery, my seventh surgery, fourth neurosurgery, at that point. Doctors, CT scans and surgeries had always been a part of my life, but it was not until that moment that I realized how truly lucky I had been and how unreliable the current treatments for hydrocephalus are. Everyone's journey is different. It's important to remember that we are our own mapmaker on this journey. While illness may put difficult terrain and detours in our path, sometimes those are the very things that guide us to the most amazing destinations." The blood vessels of the brain . Check out this awesome artwork by @skuzzz . Reposted from @skuzzz - Poster giveaway! Thanks everyone for all the support! I truly appreciate all the love and feedback I've been getting from everyone recently. This isn't much, but I'm doing a small poster giveaway. I was going through my old artwork and found several copies of this poster on blood supply to the brain. If anyone wants to tag a few friends in the comments or repost some of my ...art/tag @skuzzz, I'll throw your name onto a list and pick a few people at random (using an excel randomizer, lol). I might do a few more giveaways later in the week. Thanks again for everything!! 🧠✍🏻#poster #giveaway #medicalillustration #brain #anatomy #blood #supply #skull #medicine #artist #teaching #science #medschool #pencil #drawing #photoshop #painting #artistsoninstagram #artwork #learning #medical #illustration #free #art #drawings #picture #neuroscience #surgery #thankyou @ Royal London Hospital

Reposted from @all_the_rey_up - . Everyone hits an obstacle at some point in their life. Sometimes it's life changing and sometimes it's just an obstacle. 17 years ago (to date) I suffered a subdural hematoma (brain bleed) from a fall on the playground that required emergency brain surgery. Despite double vision and temporary paralysis I made a full recovery, so I often forgot about this incident. But a year ago as I began my search to find a new career I began to realize ...that I had this desire to help people. Maybe it's because that's who I am but maybe it's also because of the doctors, nurses, PTs, family, friends, teachers and coaches who helped me back when I was 10. No matter what your obstacle might be, you can never do it alone. I'm grateful everyday for everyone who's helped me along the way :) And fun fact: the PT for this required me to learn how to wiggle my nose and ears. . #recovery #nsgy #neurosurgery #patient #story #tbi #subduralhematoma

Throwback to #operationlive when my boss @doctorcuff and myself clipped a patient's #brain #aneurysm on live TV. . The patient, Rabia, did well after the operation. Looking back on the day it was extremely challenging. It was an early start considering we would be operating well after 8pm. . There were a lot of crew making it all happen including sound technicians, videographers and other camera crew, as well as the awesome producers Joe and Bethan. They stuck around well af...ter everyone had packed up as they wanted to make sure that Rabia woke up ok. They ended up leaving at 3am. . I also learned that even with nearly 4 months of planning, things could unravel at the last minute. In our #NHS there is huge pressure on hospitals in terms of bed availabilities and throughput of patients. We very nearly couldn't go ahead because of other emergencies coming in the night before. . #neurosurgery #television #aneurysmsurvivor #aneurysmawareness #Brainbook

This is how the spinal cord can become damaged when part of the spine fractures.
In this case you can see the tooth-like projection of the second cervical vertebra (the odontpid peg) snapping backwards and putting pressure on the spinal cord.
This is part of a series of illustrations and animations that @artibiotics_ is making for the #Brainbook Kickstarter - How to fix a broken neck.... . Emilia Clarke suffered from two brain aneurysms whilst filming GoT. She's created a charity called sameyou.org hoping to raise awareness of the need for acute neuro rehabilitation.
I think this is something that most neurosurgeons and neuro nurses can agree with!
