About Brampton Museum

We are a family friendly, local history museum and art gallery located in Brampton Park, Newcastle-Under-Lyme.

Brampton Museum Description

Hidden in Brampton Park less than half a mile from the town centre lies Newcastle-Under-Lyme’s local history museum featuring over 2000 years of Borough history.

Set in beautiful parkland the Museum and Art Gallery has something for everyone. Alongside our temporary exhibitions programme we have galleries depicting the rich and diverse history of the area using our amazing collections.

Highlights include our Victorian Street scene, which allows you to take a step back in time as you discover the wares of Mellard’s the ironmongers, the treasures of the pawnbroker’s shop, the fascinating cures of the chemist’s and the gruesome collection of doctor’s surgical instruments.

The toys gallery is a firm favourite with young and old alike with teddies, dolls and games up to 150 years old. Whilst our 1930s /40s house allows a glimpse into what life was like during the wartime years.

We are a family friendly museum and there is always something interesting for visitors of all ages to see and do.

And so...Binky is preparing to go home, he is never here on Christmas Day… he has decided to study some maps from our archive to help him find his way...
... It seems he enjoyed 'hanging around' the Brampton Museum!

We’re open until 4.30 today - your very last chance to pick up some bits and pieces for that Christmas stocking - look at these plastic free beauties.

Well folks today is the last day we will be open to the public in 2018! We will be closed from 24 December until 2 January.
Binky the museum elf is very tired after having so much fun in the museum, and has decided to have a snooze in one of the clocks in the watchmaker’s shop.

Look what we’ve found in our collection 😁😳....

Have you been good this year?
Well Binky the Museum elf is 'helping' Santa write his Naughty and Nice list.
Unfortunately he's writing the list in the museum catalogue...the Collections Officer will not be happy!

Three Landed Estates in the vicinity of Newcastle: Keele Hall, Butterton Hall & Clayton Hall Estates In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, most of the land on the west and south sides of Newcastle formed part of three landed estates: the Keele estate, the property of the Sneyd family; the Butterton estate, the property of the Swinnerton family and their descendants, the Pilkington family, and the Clayton estate, the property of the Booth family and their descendants th...e Ayshford Wise family. This course will look at the history of the landowners, their country houses, estate villages, and farms. It will consider the various ways in which these estates interacted with Newcastle-under-Lyme – as suppliers to the local market, as customers of shops, businesses and banks in the borough, and, in the case of the Sneyd family as important landowners within the town boundary. It will also show how that relationship changed with the break-up of the landed estates in the twentieth century and the conversion of much of their agricultural and into new housing estates, and, in the case of the Keele estate – the sale of a substantial part of the land around Keele Hall to a new university. The course will be offered over two terms, of eight weeks each. The first term will deal with the Butterton and Clayton estates; the second term with the Keele estate. Classes will be held in the Brampton Museum on Thursday mornings 10.15 to 12.15, and Thursday afternoons 2 to 4 pm, starting on Thursday 24 January 2019. The second term will begin on Thursday 3 October 2019.

We received some lovely feedback from a visitor today
'I had the pleasure to visit your museum and gallery earlier this year; it was a delight in its warm reception, lay-out, and information for visitors, and there was an exhibition of local artwork on at the time, which was excellent.'

“Now you see me – Now you don’t”
Binky the museum elf has always quite fancied himself as a bit of a magician, and is good at finding places to hide.
I hope the museum staff don't catch him messing about with the museum objects or he will have to disappear!

“Nobody move Herbert The Heron looks Hungry” Can you spot Binky the museum elf?

Went to see the Philip Astley Exhibition yesterday. Watched the video of Astley's life. A really great film. The museum is full of interesting things. Well worth a visit. Take the kids, they'll really enjoy it.

User

There isn’t a great deal of places offering ‘free admission’ around here... So along with free parking, a sand pit, bird aviary, natural gardens and a park on the end with a Café, what’s not to like?!

User

Fantastic place lots to do. love bringing my little girl ere she loves it especially the sandpit x
