Brent Sikh Centre Description

The Brent Sikh Centre was founded in 1995 by the Sikh community of Brent. It all started from fairly humble beginnings with programmes being held in a church hall in Edgware. These gatherings were held without break for 23 years. It was obvious to the Sikh community that our own Gurdwara as required as the Sangat grew.

At that time (in 1992), the Brent Council was disposing of an old coal depot /junkyard. The negotiations were started by Brent Sikh Centre (BSC) with Brent Council to get that land for the Sikh Community. After a period of 3 1 /2 years the council agreed to sell the land to BSC at a cost of £125, 000 for the next 125 years. Finally on 31st March 1995 Brent Sikh Centre got a permanent home in Kingsbury.

The site was a mini forest in itself. Clearing the site of overgrowth, bushes, trees etc took a long time. Services were installed and on 21st May 1995 a 30' x 20' porta cabin was positioned on the site providing a temporary hall.

The original porta cabins are now long gone and have made way for a bigger car park which can accommodate approximately 100 cars. As the Sangat continues to grow, more services are being introduced.

The first Akhand Path was held on 16th June 1995. The dining hall, kitchen and store were added later. Due to the generous nature of the Sikh Sangat, the Gurdwara has grown out of the porta cabin and we now have a magnificent new building for our community. The building features two halls for programs and a large langar hall downstairs.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji Shaheedi Gurpurab is on 7th June 2019. We shall be holding Akhand Paath - Arambh of Shri Akhand Paath will be at 9am Friday 7th with Bhog at 9am Sunday 9th June.
Guru Arjun Dev Ji wrote the Sukmani Sahib Paath. The composition deals with such topics such as Simran (general meditation that leads to merging with God) and Nam Japna (meditation of Naam), the greatness of Saints and Sadh Sangat (holy congregation), true devotion, doing good deeds, the nature of... the mind, the badness of slandering, concepts relating to Bhramvidya, Adviata, Sargun and Nirgun, materialism and death, Hukam, and other similar topics.
Below are a few translated lines from the first ashtpadi of the Sukhmani Sahib: Salok: I bow to the Primal Guru. I bow to the Guru of the ages. I bow to the True Guru. I bow to the Great, Divine Guru. ||1||
Ashtapadee:
Meditate, meditate, meditate in remembrance of Him, and find peace. Worry and anguish shall be dispelled from your body. Remember in praise the One who pervades the whole Universe. His Name is chanted by countless people, in so many ways. The Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, the purest of utterances, were created from the One Word of the Name of the Lord. That one, in whose soul the One Lord dwells - the praises of his glory cannot be recounted. Those who yearn only for the blessing of Your Darshan - Nanak: save me along with them!

Today is Guru Teg Bahadar sahib ji de PRAKASH PURAB. He sacrificed his life to protect a belief that was not his own.
Great Guru Gobind Singh, has described this his father Guru Tegh Bhadhur Ji’s supreme act in His autobiography as follows:-
"The Lord protected their frontal mark and sacred thread; And performed a supremely heroic act in this age of Ignorance.
... To uphold righteousness, so supreme an act did He perform; He gave His head, but did not utter a word of sorrow.
For the sake of righteousness. He did this great heroic deed; He laid down His life but not the principles.
Miracles are a cheap way of fooling people; True Prophets of God are ashamed of displaying occult powers.
Guru Tegh Bahadur broke His earthly vase on the head of the Emperor of Delhi; And went to the Abode of God.
No one has ever done such a unique deed as did Guru Tegh Bahadur.
On the Ascent of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the whole world went into mourning.
Alas! Alas! rose the wailing cries from the earth; While the shouts of Glory! Glory! resounded the heavens."
