Quality time with our children is so important, we know that positive relationships are key for children to develop and thrive long-term - how do we create quality time with a teenager?
This article from the amazing Janet Lansbury is a great example of our 'Power of Ten' strategy. They need us more than ever, it's a hard parenting season so hang in there and focus on quality interactions and exchanges.

Play ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š
Play is vital for childrenโ€™s emotional health and emotional, social, physical and cognitive development.
Children learn through play, they practice what theyโ€™ve learnt through play, they learn language and communication skills; and itโ€™s a natural stress reliever too (and thatโ€™s just scratching the surface).
... When I talk about screen time I explain itโ€™s not always being on screens per se, but the opportunity cost of being on them thatโ€™s significant ; what are they not doing as a result of being on screens?
Balance is so important, screens arenโ€™t going anywhere and they have a lot of positives, but it should never be at the expense of adequate time to play, itโ€™s what young brains were designed to do ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š

Loved meeting with Breathing Space Yoga Studio yesterday, its fantastic to hear about the amazing yoga studio that Derby will soon have!
We are both really looking forward to seeing the space and using it in some capacity; Christine and Bel are both so experienced and passionate that I know it will be a space that contributes to supporting mental health in our city.
Derby has so much to be proud of, the mental health statistics arenโ€™t one of them, but the people Iโ€™ve met try...ing to make a difference most definitely are ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š

Itโ€™s so important to keep the focus on long-term outcomes for our children when parenting.
I talk about rewards and punishments a lot, but itโ€™s not without good reason, another good post on this here:

If your child has experienced trauma of any kind then parenting in this way is incredibly powerful and healing.
From more extreme adverse childhood experiences to divorce and death, meeting children where they are and helping them feel unconditional love is so vital for long-term positive outcomes and relationships.
โ€œWhatโ€™s predictable is preventableโ€™ how brilliant is that?! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š

Proprioception ๐Ÿ’š
Do you have a sensory avoider or seeker?
The more we understand about our 8 senses the more we can support children appropriately.
... Itโ€™s important to remember how nurturing physical development also supports good mental health.
โ€˜Proprioception is the sense of knowing where your body is in space and in relation to objects around it. Being able to type without looking at the keys, raising your arm above your head or touching your nose while your eyes are closed is your proprioception system at work.โ€™
This post has some great ideas for proprioceptive input ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š

Perfectionism affects a large proportion of young people we come into contact with. Perfectionism can start a really negative mindset about ourselves and lead to developing mental health illnesses.
Many adults suffer with this as well and it can set a precedent for our children.

Weaving small strategies into your day to day teaching can make big differences to pupilโ€™s who are struggling to self-regulate.
Now we understand what behaviour is, we can think about how to read that communication and put appropriate support in place. It can look different for every child which is why a positive relationship is so vital, but once you have it then making the small changes doesnโ€™t use more time, in fact it can save it.
This article has amazing tips and ideas f...or teachers to try - we love workshopping these ideas in our training and building teachers toolkits! ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š
