Today (12 May) is #FibromyalgiaAwarenessDay. We caught up with Dr Jessica Eccles, one of our leading researchers on this debilitating condition, to find out more about her involvement in a ground-breaking study.
“Our study looks at brain-body interactions, for example, how the brain of a Fibromyalgia patient responds to inflammation, and what causes autonomic hyperactivity. I see lots of people in my clinic who have Fibromyalgia or have significant fatigue, and I want to fin...d real, practical ways to help them.”

A worldwide study involving academics from BSMS has found that people with ADHD have subtle differences in the cerebral cortex, the brain's outer layer. The disorder affects more than one in 20 children worldwide.
Professor Mara Cercignani, Academic Director of Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre at BSMS and contributing author on the study, said: “This study is an example of the importance of large, multi-centre studies for understanding conditions such as ADHD, characterised... by very subtle brain changes. It simply would not be possible for a single site to recruit a sufficiently large sample. This type of study is becoming more common and it is important for BSMS researchers to be part of this effort.”

Dr Dipesh Gopal, an Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) in General Practice at Queen Mary University of London and BSMS Alumni, has recorded a podcast with colleagues about the importance of academia in general practice as well as happiness/purpose in life.
The podcast is designed to reach out to students and junior doctors who might be interested in the topic.
Dr Gopal says: "If it wasn't for the guidance of Simon Glew, a previous ACF at BSMS and Prof Helen Smith, previously Pr...ofessor of General Practice at BSMS, I would have not been introduced to the exciting world of Academic General Practice – my current job and dream job."

Year 5 BSMS student Alexa Warnes has published her thesis ‘Exploring Pronatalism and Assisted Reproduction in UK Medicine’ in the Journal of International Women's Studies! She argues that pronatalism – a social bias in favour of biological motherhood – entrenches harmful social norms for women as a group.
