Me and my friend Andy are out in India for six weeks doing a cycle trip from Delhi down to Kerala which is around 2,600 Kms . Before we embark on the trip we decided to visit s few places first including the Taj Mahal and Varanasi . Varanasi has interested me after hearing a few years back that it was Indias most spiritual city and where families cremate there relatives at the edge of the Ganges river , believing that the cycle of death and rebirth would be broken if they wer...e cremated in Varanasi and the relative would reach enlightenment called Moksha . It’s truly an amazing sight witnessing the ceremonies from when they bring the body in a bamboo stretcher wrapped in a red , gold and orange shroud , bathed in the Ganges and laid to rest on a funeral pyre , the families then light the pyre and three hours later the ashes are put into the Ganges . Between 200 and 300 bodies a day are cremated in this way and it is a great honour to be cremated here . The city is also famous for yoga and meditation and for families to come and bathe in the holy waters of the Ganges .off to Agra and the Taj Mahal tomorrow.
