Currently, women with a strong family history of cancer can be tested for the BRCA gene, which greatly increases a woman's chance of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Angelina Jolie inherited BRCA1 from her mother - she had preventative surgery after her doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer.

An experimental blood test has been able to correctly identify patients already diagnosed with early stages of cancer. Picking up the disease earlier is important because it becomes harder to treat at later stages, but the test needs refining before it can make it to the clinic. This is because for some cancers it was only able to detect half of the earliest stage cases.

Some newspapers this week claimed that diets rick in junk food could raise the risk of cancer in postmenopausal women who are a normal weight. But the study these reports were based on does not convincingly show that eating junk food has a direct effect on cancer risk beyond its impact on people's weight.

New NHS figures have shown that cancer patients are waiting too long for urgent referral appointments and treatment. The government has now failed to meet waiting time targets for cancer patients for nearly three years.
Our clinic at Spire Portsmouth Hospital can fast track appointments for any women concerned about symptoms or who would prefer to not to wait for the NHS referral pathway. Call us on 023 9245 6107 to make a direct appointment.

In case you are not aware, women over 50 should still have cervical screening. Cervical cancer is a preventable disease so don't be the one in three that doesn't attend screening.

It is was great honour to be a foundation speaker at the international symposium for pelvic cancer at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon.
The Champalimaud Foundation has created this stunning state of the art facility for the research, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Knowledge sharing of best practice and new discoveries is a large part of their drive to push the boundaries of cancer care. I talked about the latest advances in robotic surgery for the trea...tment of gynaecological cancers. The view of and from the lecture theatre don’t get much better than this!
To learn more about the cutting-edge research and treatment at this state of the art facility, see http://www.fchampalimaud.org/en/the-found ation/
