About Bristol Igem

The iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machine) competition runs for the length of each summer and encourages students 'to work together to solve real-world challenges by building genetically engineered biological systems with standard, interchangeable parts' (iGEM website). This year, the University of Bristol team plans on creating a bioreactor which removes the pollutant NOx from the atmosphere, and produces electricity or a useful substance, such as ammonia. The bioreactors would most likely be in the form of pods which could be placed, for example, around a city centre where NOx levels are the highest and most dangerous.
