Bristol Is The New Black

About Bristol Is The New Black

Bristol is the New Black (BITNB) is an O2 - sponsored initiative raising awareness of the black people who are shaping life and culture in Bristol. This may be through campaigning, art, business, or just generally being an interesting person. BITNB seeks to promote and connect these individuals and their narratives to a wider community of inspiring black people in Bristol. The project will regularly publish both written and audio pieces seeking to highlight and raise awareness of the black Bristolian experience. Each month's content will have its own theme, showcasing relevant and topical issues. The platform will launch online on the 22nd September and will have its physical launch at the end of November. To the surprise of many, only 51 home black students graduated from Bristol University in 2015, and though many factors may have contributed to this, we feel that the systematic lack of support and absence of a close-knit community plays a key role. The online platform is a way to help students and young people learn about, identify with, and aspire to role models in their own community. It will also be used to ensure that students know how and where to find familiar faces and spaces. In future, the platform will host more events that seek to connect black individuals in Bristol, spark conversation and create ideas.
