British Manufacturing History

About British Manufacturing History

I am an historian exploring the story of British manufacturing. My research is revealing wonderful examples of invention and creative marketing, but also failures in government and short-termism in finance. How Britain Created the Manufacturing World was published by Pen & Sword in June 2022 and explores the century between the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Festival of Britain whilst also reaching down the strands leading back to the origins of manufacturing in these islands. The project built on research I had carried out into how the British Army was supplied in two world wars. This was a story of astonishing sacrifice by British manufacturers in support of the war effort: Dunkirk to D Day published by Pen & Sword, which tells the stories of the leaders; War on Wheels and Ordnance published by The History Press focusing on WW2 and WW1 respectively. I am now working on the sequel, Whatever Happened to British Manufacturing. The answer is a great deal! I post my ongoing research on my website
