About British Shorinji Kempo Federation

Shorinji Kempo: Self Defence, Zen Meditation & Self Improvement.

British Shorinji Kempo Federation Description

The BSKF was the original organisation that founded Shorinji Kempo in the UK in 1974, and exists to promote a Healthy Body, Healthy Mind and Self Defence.

Shorinji Kempo incorporates effective self defence techniques with practical Kongo Zen philosophy. The training aims to develop the potential of the individual and create balanced people, both mentally and physically. Its intentions are to instill a student with the confidence needed to stand up for their ideals and the ability to defend their position. In this way they can help others and benefit society as a whole.

The self defence techniques incorporate both hard and soft techniques: 'Goho' and 'Juho'. Goho is the hard or active system, comprising swift, accurate and scientifically based techniques involving punches, kicks, dodges and blocks. Juho is the soft or passive system, used when grabbed or held against one's will. They comprise releasing or throwing the opponent and applying locks to subdue them. The two systems are used hand in hand to create a unique all round system of self defence based on technique rather than strength, capable of repelling any form of attack.

The teachings also include 'Seiho' and Zazen meditation. Seiho is a therapeutic accupressure massage system used to relax muscles, relieve tension and regulate circulation. Zazen meditation is practiced during every class to calm the mind and encourage breathing control.

It was a wonderful programme packed with opportunities to get world-class instruction and to meet up with friends! Photos and videos are already appearing and will surely continue to, but here is a small selection:

With 2017 drawing to a close, many Shorinji Kempo students have taken the opportunity to end the year with a personal achievement by trying for their next belt - several gradings have taken place over the last week. Congratulations to those now celebrating their hard-earned progress, and for everyone else, there will be plenty of chances next year!
Here are a few pictures of the 2nd December grading in Chiswick. (With thanks to Jackie Fitzgerald of Imperial Club.)

Not long ago we launched our very popular series of Shakujo (six-foot staff) instructional videos, followed by the Instructor Series covering a range of general points useful for everyone from beginners to seasoned students. Here's the Shakujo trailer again, and a reminder that you can purchase and watch the first two videos via vimeo. Remember to follow the BSKF on vimeo to find out about new material as soon as it appears!

Shorinji Kempo has a great history in the UK, and just over three years ago we all gathered together to celebrate the British Shorinji Kempo Federation's 40th anniversary. Many people trained at this wonderful event and came together with fellow students, some of whom they hadn't seen for a long time, but the friendships we build in training endure through many years. Some of those friendships have lasted as long as the BSKF itself! Here's a short video to remind you of what happened that weekend.

Gradings are an important part of Shorinji Kempo - not for the sake of evaluating a student from the outside, but to give students something to work toward in their own personal development. We are looking forward to the upcoming gradings in London and Glasgow in early December, and we'd love to see how clubs are preparing! Share photos or stories about your grading prep to inspire fellow students to go the extra mile to test themselves!
Meanwhile, a photo to remind us of the intensity of a grading (thanks to Aled Moses of Imperial College Club) and the celebrations afterward (thanks to Kat Thomson of Glasgow Club)!

The British Shorinji Kempo Federation is proud of our friendships with other members of the International Kempo Association, and the IKA Seminar is always one of the highlights of the year. In 2018 the BSKF will be hosting the seminar in Bristol, after previous seminars in Japan (2015), Czech Republic (2016), and Spain (2017). Keep an eye out for updates about the event, which is sure to be another memorable experience!

It's hard to say in a short post what Shorinji Kempo is - for those who have trained a long time it means many things all at once. But some ideas at its core are:
- To look after and develop the body, whether through building fitness or through improving control of one's movements; - To develop a strong but compassionate sense of self, with the confidence to act and the willingness to help others; - To gain skills in self-defence, so as to keep oneself and others safe.
... If you've been with us for a while, what would go in your list? If you're new, what do you still want to know about Shorinji Kempo?

There will be a BSKF Taikai (with demonstrations, sparring, and a half-day seminar) on 19th November. Share within your club, and enter something - you have exactly one month to prepare! The event can be a great success, but only with participation from across the BSKF.
It's never too early in your Kempo life to put together your first embu!

Many of our black belt students have recently returned from the 2017 Leader's Seminar in Cyprus. They'll be rejoining their clubs with lots of new ideas to share - if you attended, check in and let us know what you gained from this unique seminar!
