Broadlands Group Rda, Medstead. Hants

The Broadlands Riding for the Disabled Group is based in Medstead, Hampshire and provides therapeutic facilities for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults in Hampshire. It is one of oldest RDA groups and during the last 63 years Broadlands RDA has helped over 4, 000 adults and children, challenged by a wide range of disabilities. They enable these people to participate in riding, develop friendships, expand their learning skills and grow in confidence as individuals. All the children and adults they have helped suffer from a wide spectrum of disabilities and include those with Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida and Autism. They also assist accident victims and have worked with those coping with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with great success and are looking to expand this aspect of therapy and become the main specialist centre in Hampshire. Since 1974, Suzanne Stratford has been managing this life changing centre with a group of dedicated staff and volunteers, providing over 1, 000 rides annually. Broadlands is currently supported by 58 volunteers including riding Instructors, Duke of Edinburgh Award students, parents and therapists. They all donate their time freely to the charity. The RDA has recently been involved in a fundraising effort to replace the asbestos roof and develop the site, so they can become a centre of teaching and excellence and, potentially treat more children and adults into the future. They have raised funding for the initial phase of the project (replacing the old asbestos roof ) and are due to start this work in May, which means the children will be able to ride in a well -lit and modern schooling section. However our fund raising continues and this unique and specialist centre still requires support and help if it is to survive and continue to bring therapy and relief to those that are facing extraordinary challenges in their everyday life.
