On this day in 1847 the SS Great Britain was refloated after almost a year at Dundrum Bay.
Brunel remarked of the abandoned ship that she ‘is lying like a useless saucepan kicking about on a most exposed shore'

At the time of the SS Great Britain's rescue she was in such a poor state, it was feared she would not last another six months.
High levels of moisture in the air meant that once home the ship continued to corrode. The most fragile parts, below the waterline, were sealed in a giant dehumidification chamber. Two dehumidification machines keep the air at a relative humidity of 20% meaning that corrosion cannot take place. The air in the dry dock is now as arid as the Arizona Desert!

Happy World Photo Day!
This is the first known photograph of the SS Great Britain, it was taken by Henry Fox Talbot in 1844 and is believed to be the first ever taken of a ship.

New findings have uncovered the previously unknown extent to which the SS Great Britain was involved in the passage of huge volumes of plants, animals and seeds during global voyaging to Australia.

This photograph shows the crew of the SS Great Britain on the weather deck. There is no funnel visible so the image was probably taken in the 1880s when the ship had been converted to a sailing vessel.

Happy #InternationalCatDay! Here's our ship's cat, Izzy.
Did you know on board the SS Great Britain, pet cats were strictly confined to the ship’s kennel quarters? However, many passengers could not bear being parted with their feline companions. There are many reports of the furry creatures wandering freely around the ship.

What a well done restoration and presentation of one of the most remarkable ships in the world. The accompanying “Inside Brunel” exhibit is equally fascinating. A must do visit for anyone at all interesting in maritime history.

User

What a great afternoon we had today, very interesting, lots for the kids to see and marvel at, and a special mention must be made to the very friendly staff, all so helpful and pleasant. My daughter was especially taken with Isambard himself who was very engaging and good fun, she was seeking him out by the time we left to say bye but sadly we didn’t find him. Highly recommended and we will certainly be using our return tickets

User

Value for money and great for kids of all ages. The littlest loved being able to run around freely and the older two loved the satchel with activities to work around the ship.

User

The SS Great Britain is a brilliant day out and the exhibitions are fascinating and appeal to all ages. I didn't think that they could improve it much but the new Bring Brunel museum is excellent and a big fat cherry on top of an already enjoyable experience.

User

Really enjoyable day for all ages, really interesting. Found it good value as you can revisit on your tickets again and again through the year.

Mum and I made a special trip from Scotland just to see the unique 6 bladed propeller. My dad worked for a small family foundry that back in the 70's were given the order to make the replica propeller. We were blown away with the lovely welcome we received from all the crew, and our photos of the propeller being made are now logged into modern history. Thank you souch to Nick and all the Crew for making us feel special. The SS Great Britain is a brilliant experience and the new Brunel Museum was such an insight to a very clever man. We loved every second.

User

I was bought up in a house that was designed by Brunel and built in 1842 so the new museum was very interesting. So much information. I had never been to see the SS Great Britain before so that was also good. We spent four hours walking around. We had a quick lunch in the cafe which I would also recommend, toastie was delicious. Crew members were very friendly and very willing to help. Great enjoyable day out.

User

I have just returned from 2 day stay in Bristol and the high light was the time spent with my 3 daughters and their husbands on board ss GB, this has been around my tenth visit with my wife over the years. This time was to celebrate my 80th birthday and I must say that the staff on board were must helpful. The museum is spectacular and a tribute to the trustees and volunteers long may you all continue to make ss GB the star of Bristol To crown my visit a crossing of the Clifton Bridge

As they say I Will Return!😎😎

User

Great on a cloudy day but cannot wait to come back and see the harbourside in the sunshine. Will definitely be using today's ticket option to return for free. Museum was great for children of all ages, the smells on the ship were a bit too realistic at times!

User

Great afternoon first saw SS great Britain when she was pulled up the river many years ago.they have done a super job setting up the museum well done

User

From top to bottom the ship is displayed with the kind of panache, that I feel, Brunel himself would’ve admired. There’s lots to do and see for all ages, including a chance to climb the rigging!

User

Fantastic day out. The museum is brilliant and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and helpful.it is a very authentic experience and you get to feel how grim life was on board. The only let down was the catering, it was appalling so I'd recommend eating elsewhere.

User

Fantastic day out!! Enjoyed the wonderful reconstruction of the ships history & especially having the opportunity to climb the rigging. The staff were fantastic, keeping us informed about the weather conditions because the wind was gusting off and on. Love the new museum, especially the wide gauge moving carriage. Definitely recommend a return visit. The only disappointing element was the little cafe of the side, not everyone likes pies!

User

Fantastic day out with the family lots to do and see. and the new brunel museum is a great look in to the great man him self.

User

Brilliant day out loads to do & the staff & entertainers are amazing. So pleased 😁 our ticket lasts for a year as we will be back Definitely to book to climb the rigging. We will be back soon with the kids excellent 5 star 🌟 ⭐️🌟⭐️🌟

User

If you're into ships you will love this vessel, it's history and the amazing restoration throughout.

The museum is informative with heaps of parts from the ship and also very interactive.

User

A top day all round, with a lot of attention to detail made, with in the creativity side of things.

A lot to see & go around, with it being very interesting & eye opening!!!

Worth the money & day out in my view 😄

User

A excellent visit. We had a guided tour of the ship, which was very good, and recommended to get those interesting facts and figures and insight to the ships history. The new Brunel museum is a brilliant addition. Overall, I will be going back soon to soak up more of the history, well worth it
