Did you know? Each year, grateful patients and visitors give back to each of our 4 hospitals and help improve care for those who need it most. To make this easier, we've created online giving pages for each hospital. Please help spread the word by sharing far and wide: Princess Royal Hospital - https://bit.ly/2rSyZTT Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital - https://bit.ly/2k7QUl9 Royal Sussex County Hospital - https://bit.ly/2IzVhQV Sussex Eye Hospital - https://bit.ly/2KzsMDi

Thanks to the generous contributions of community members to the Sussex Eye Hospital’s Charitable Fund and the trusty research of the team in theatres, patients are now wrapped in warm blankets after undergoing their operations. The idea came to light when theatre staff noticed that patients were uncomfortable after operations. The Sussex Eye Hospital can be such a cold building, and staff found that patients in the recovery room seemed to be affected by the cold the most. ...To resolve this, Tanya, Theatre Secretary, researched and proposed purchasing a blanket warmer with the capability to safely and evenly warm 10-12 blankets at a time. The warmer is small enough to sit on a countertop, is quiet and has no moving parts. Since the machine is fan-less and emits relaxing, blue lights, the equipment helps nurses and aides emphasise the comfort and care of patients. Most importantly, the warm blankets ensure continuity of warmth from when patients leave operating theatres and are transferred to recover on Pickford Ward. Phil Harris, Clinical Theatre Manager, said of the blankets, “The blankets are a really nice thing to have for patients. Just the other week, we placed a warmed blanket on a patient in recovery who immediately smiled and said, “Ooooh….that feels nice!” The blankets have also comforted patients before their operation. Tina, theatre nurse shared that a patient was nervous prior to undergoing her operation and the blanket helped to calm her down. Comforts like this are only possible thanks to the generosity of people that donate to the Sussex Eye Hospital.

What better way to improve care for patients than by showing our passion and commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and love? For the second year in a row, the Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals Charity (BSUH Charity) had the privilege of hosting a float and walkers at Brighton Pride to represent the hard-working staff at the BSUH NHS Trust. Over 130 staff members joined in the fun at this year’s parade from finance team leads to paediatric registrars to the Chief Executiv...e. Representation was phenomenal!
Though the parade is an incredibly fun day out, it is also a truly important event – representing social justice, equality, and the fight for civil rights. The BSUH NHS Trust is honoured to be a part of this movement that continues for our brothers and sisters in the LGBT+ community. Though most of the day is full of laughter and joy, one cannot help but get emotional at the incredible, intense feeling of appreciation and support by the crowds along the route. To celebrate the NHS’s 70th birthday, our float was designed and built in partnership with Brighton University and the Princes’ Trust to resemble a giant birthday cake. We also danced along the 2.3 mile parade route to a heart-pumping playlist compiled by our fabulous research nurses. The atmosphere was exactly one of a fantastic birthday party, and several times along the route, groups of supporters chanted, “NHS! NHS! NHS!”
The BSUH Charity hopes to host the Trust float for several years to come. To everyone who took part in planning and preparations, Thank you! To our fearless leader for the day, Nicky Caley, we take off our hats to you! To those who walked alongside us and cheered for us as we passed, you are rock stars! We are graciously reflecting on a day full of colour, smiles, and humanity. Thank you all! #BrightonPride Brighton Gay Pride
