Buddhapadipa Temple Description

Wat Buddhapadipa in London was the first Buddhist temple to be built in the United Kingdom.

It was established by the London Buddhist Temple Foundation with the objective of creating a centre for the dissemination of theoretical and practical Buddhist teachings in Europe.

"Wat" is the Thai word for temple or monastery and is used as a prefix to denote the name of a temple.

Buddhapadipa is a compound word in Pali, the Buddhist canonical language, meaning ‘lamp or light of the Buddha’.

Went here as a part of a university trip. Really enjoyed my time interacting with the monks and grateful for the talk they gave us. Will be visiting again in the future for sure!

User

This is one of my most favourite places in the whole world...a haven of pure beauty...heavenly woodland...peaceful...friendly hospitable Thai monks and temple staff...always wonderful to step back into this paradise!

User

Peaceful and beautiful temple. Felt so peaceful n calm when im was in the main temple.

Will come back again when i have the chance. Thank you Wat Buddhapadipa.

Peaceful and beautiful place. It's not often that you find a place in the London area with silence. I will definitely be visiting more often. The temple is lovely and while the outside is a bit rundown renovations are in the works. They are having a festival 9 July 2017 and I hope to be able to go.

My family and I visited today. We were greeted by a delightful lady called 'Elaine' she made us and our 2 boys aged 4 and 5 most welcome. We ate like kings....there was so much food on offer and I must say all to a high standard. The temple its self was stunning inside and outside. My boys really enjoyed walking around the garden area and feeding the ducks. They got to meet a very lovely monk. We will most definitely be returning to this hidden gem. Xxxxx

It is a great place to have a walk, and collect your thoughts, think about any problem you have, then by time you come out you wonder why you were so worried. Love the place.

I have been going to buddhadipa temple for many years now, it is getting more and more beautiful each year, the community is getting larger and larger, it is my favorite temple to visit as it is run very well and it has a beautiful nice and calming atmosphere.

It is a Thai temple so for me it is that extra special as it reminds me of Thailand.

I am 100% Thai and Budhist. Come here and you feel peaceful in mind as soon as you make a first step into our temple.

User

Highly recommend the 5 day retreat , you go back to basics with kindness and love all around you -- and come out feeling nurtured and new -- thank you

Friendly way to meditate or learn meditation.

Being there and wandering around the grounds and by the river made me realize that I was missing home very much. A few hours there helped me put a lot of things into perspective. Felt privileged to spend time in the Temple and share readings with other visitors and staff. Would love to be able to revisit for a meditation week end

A beautiful haven of peace and tranquility. The trees at this time are stunning and the light shimmering on the lake was so pretty . Always a fine welcome and an uplifting experience.

When we visited it was in the middle of being renovated so was unable to enter the temple. We did not see any monks and as we always bring gifts of food we ended up giving it to some lovely ladies who were making flower decorations.

It was sad that it was not open fully and I wish they had made a comment on their website as we had travelled from Essex to visit it. We have been before and found it a lovely peaceful place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of London. It almost feels like you are in Thailand.

We will try again next year!

I've been coming to this temple now since 30 years. I love coming here however it is a little run down now and would request visitors to donate money toward renovations. Such a beautiful place I always find peace here but want to still feel the same in another 30 years

I am half Thai and I love Thailand and the Thai and Buddhist culture. I used to come to this temple all the time. However I recently had to stop coming because of the behaviour of one of the monks. He was really unfriendly and rude towards me. For example when I raised my hands to Sawasdee krub this monk, he just looked away from me and didn't even acknowledge me. Another incident was when I wanted a photo with a monk on another trip to the temple. The only monk available was the same one. I thought maybe last time was a one off so I asked him for a photo. He was really grumpy and not happy to have a photo with me.

I thought it is important to treat other humans with respect and love, but with this monk I felt the opposite.

I have recently discovered another Thai temple where the staff and monks are extremely friendly to me and I feel welcomed there.
