About Bufi - British Geological Survey (Bgs) University Funding Initiative

The British Geological Survey (BGS) University Funding Initiative or BUFI as it is known, in collaboration with university partners, takes great pride in being one of the UK's largest providers of postgraduate research training in applied geoscience. Here you can stay connected with past and present students and supervisors. The BGS is presently involved in the training of over 100 doctoral researchers. From 2014 our PhDs have been delivered through the NERC Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) or Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs). Our PhD students research and receive training in topics that cover all BGS science areas and the trend is towards interdisciplinary applied environmental science. Our students carry out fieldwork in the UK and internationally, have use of our modelling technologies, such as our 3D visualisation suite, and our state-of-the-art laboratories. They also have access to the most comprehensive collection of subsurface information, which is held in our National Geoscience Data Centre. Crucially, students are able to interact with a diverse range of internationally renowned scientists. The BGS is proud of the key role we play in developing the next generation of applied earth scientists. A list of current PhD projects, publications, BUFI alumni and PhD opportunities can be found on our website.
