Burghley House

About Burghley House

Burghley House - England's Greatest Elizabethan House

Burghley House Description

Built and mostly designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete. Visitor facilities include the Orangery Restaurant, Gift Shop, Gardens of Surprise and beautiful walks around the historic parkland laid out by Capability Brown and still occupied by a herd of fallow deer.

History can come alive in a single trip whether it is to enjoy a guided tour, take a dog for a walk in the park, take the children to paddle, see the Teddy Bear’s picnic in the Gardens of Surprise or take time over lunch in the Orangery

Well worth more than one visit as there is so much to see and learn. Take a guided tour and then return to absorb even more. The gardens are full of delights and worth a day on their own!

We have attended a fantastic Burghley at twilight evening yesterday and we loved it big way and we would like to thank the hosts for such a great idea and show of art and style! we loved everything - the display, the music and readings, the staff answering questions and the welcoming atmosphere and ambience! we enjoyed every bit and took maybe around 200 non-flash photos between our company of four- we loved the chance of taking pics and showing to our friends, many many thanks for a very special evening xxx

And many thanks for the singers, artists and musicians, this really added so much to the display <3

This was our first visit to the house and gardens. We found staff very kind and helpful. They were quite happy to answer and questions and to talk about the history of the place. We thoroughly enjoyed the gardens especially the sculpture garden . Lots of families there enjoying the picnic area with their children. We totally enjoyed it x

The offer of free admission for all us hard working NHS staff is a great gesture however like many NHS staff I’m on nights or others will be working days such a pity it’s only for 1 day !! Seems like you possibly don’t want too many people getting free admission ?!? How about you offer for a week and think of all the extra shop, cafe, ice cream sales etc also the people who may then buy a season ticket ?? Just a thought Burghley House

Manage to visit Burghley house Twilight tour last night must say what a lovely evening will have to return for the Halloween special next year. Wondering if Burghley house has thought of hosting evening concerts i.e. pop music and classical music etc would be a lovely backdrop, your staff are outstanding and very approachable and knowledgeable

Had afternoon tea in the Orangery this afternoon in celebration of a friend's birthday and it was fabulous. The staff could not have been more attentive and the head waitress (sorry, don't know her name) was excellent. Highly recommended.

Fantastic weekend away at Burghley. First time I'd been and thoroughly enjoyed experience. Can't wait to go back again. Only issue was leaving the car park on re Saturday after xcountry. No wardens at top end of park near trade stands which caused massive queue. Other than this was great experience. Something for everyone. Think people should bd allowed into some until keyed stands on the Sunday however as not much to watch for the price of the ticket and screens only seemed to show advertising most of day. Would have been good to see footage of previous days xcountry on these

Have lived in Stamford for 5 years and finally got round to visiting yesterday. Bought tickets on line which means we can visit as often as we want within the year. Enjoyed looking around the house and the garden of surprises provided additional entertainment. We ate in the Orangey and the food was good even though a little pricey. The queue for food was long and then it took half an hour to be served; given the number of staff on duty I think this was down to inefficient ways of working. Nonetheless, we really enjoyed the visit and will definitely be back.

Garden of Surprises is a treat on hot days. They have offer these days that if u buy tickets online, they can be converted to annual pass on entrance. So its definitely worth it.

First time here and so impressed! I loved the shopping foodstalls and of course the horse trials. Food was rather pricey some were hit and miss on quality! The toilets were so so preferred the portacabin if I am honest, they were so clean and appreciated. Big thumbs up on the cleanliness/washing hands. Portaloos okay but mostly clean so no grumbles there. The course was immense and amazing! Parking was good but exiting on Saturday took sooo long! Looking forward to next year and will cone again. Would love to visit the Burghley house next time.

After planning to go to Burghley House for a long time, me and my girlfriend finally got there yesterday. In our opinion the house was very nice with lots of beautiful rooms especially the rooms that had painted scenes all over the walls and ceiling. My head never stopped moving because there was so much to see. The gardens weren't as good as the house but if you have kids, the water amusement will keep them busy for a long time. Overall as pleasant experience .

No food available today despite promise of a restaurant and a cafe. Restaurant closed, seems to be a food hygiene problem. Cafe open but only drinks, nuts and crisps. No sandwiches or cake. 56 people on the coach went hungry as no notice given so we could buy something on the way. Coach driver absurdly given a £10 food voucher valid for only one day when there was no food to be bought. Pathetic response by staff. Stay away: this information is not on the website.

Visited the house for the first time yesterday. One of our party is disabled but we were told there were no concessions for disabled or carers (only if the carer carried a Government carers card). Cost £72 for the four of us for the house and gardens. If we wanted a guide book, that was expensive too so we didn't bother. We declined the guide book. House was lovely, but staff were very snobby and one woman was downright bloody rude to me, turning her back on me when I spoke to her and not replying! Another told me off for deigning to stand too close to the wall in a room as if I was a naughty school child. Not very nice people who obviously look down on visitors as a necessary annoyance. Food at the Orangery was very mediocre and vastly overpriced. I expect a ploughmans lunch to have a decent amount of cheese. What I got was not much more than the size of Dairylea triangles. We had two very mediocre ploughmans, one sandwich and a salad, plus two tiny bottle of lemonade and two small bottles of water that came to a whopping £45! Gardens were quite nice to wander round. Glad we finally visited but will not go back. Staff are not very friendly.

Love it, great for dogs BUT this weekend there were lots of dogs off lead - why do people think that the sign asking to keep dogs on leads doesn't apply to them!!! So many idiots about, shan't go back at weekends anymore. Rangers should be out and about more.

LACK OF INFORMATION ABOUT EXHIBITS.

Purchased an annual pass as the children enjoy the gardens. However decided to visit the house today and was very disappointed.

1. No one available on the pre booked/annual ticket desk so we had to queue to get in.

2. The staff on the ticket desk did not offer the free children's guide. (We were only offered this when we entered into the kitchen).

3. The ticket desk staff had no knowledge about what the annual pass covers.

3. Without the purchase of the audio guide or guidebook (addional cost!) there is no information to read in Burghley House. The artwork is numbered but there is no writing to give dates/artists/people in the portraits. The rooms have names but there is no information about the room.

After paying over £50 for entry I would expect some information about what we are looking at. Thankfully one of our children read from her mini guide book but that's it. Tonight I have found some information on the website in relation to the history of Burghley but why is this not printed out for people to read when they are in the rooms? As parents, we also encourage our children to take an interest in history and to ask questions but with no information, how can we do this?
