About Burnby Hall Gardens

Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum

Burnby Hall Gardens Description

Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum are situated in Pocklington on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. Originally the estate of adventurer and philanthropist Major Percy Stewart and his wife Katharine, the 9 acres of land, comprising 2 lakes and a National Collection of over 100 varieties of Hardy Water Lily, were left in trust on his death in 1962. The Gardens are a haven of tranquillity, and the Stewart Museum houses several exhibits of UNESCO standard. Children's events, outside theatre and band concerts are held during the spring and summer months. See www. burnbyhallgardens.com for full details.

WATERLILIES ON THE UPPER LAKE
AN IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR OUR VISITORS
We are now entering the last few weeks of a 3 year £635k Golden Jubilee Restoration Project in the Gardens which has seen the Upper Lake desilted and its edges repaired, our National Collection of Water Lilies restored and replanted, the Rock Garden cleared and replanted, the Edwardian Potting Sheds renovated, a new Learning Zone created, and a Birch walk created thanks to an award from the National Lottery He...ritage Fund.
However, the discovery of further cracks in the lake edges caused an unexpected extension to the repair period, which delayed the re-planting of our water lilies by eight weeks during the spring of 2018. This has meant that our new plants were unable to root properly and consequently this year’s Water Lilies will not be in full bloom on our Upper Lake as anticipated.
Unfortunately, these are circumstances beyond our control, but we want to assure our visitors that we are working to resolve the situation and larger plants will be introduced in the spring of 2020 to replace those which have not developed.
Water Lilies on the Lower Lake remain unaffected and the addition of the newly restored Rock Garden and newly created Birch Walk will, we hope, provide some additional summer colour.

Tree of the Week - By Jill Ward, Gardens Supervisor... :)
Laburnum anagroides
This week I have another flowering tree to write about:
... Laburnum angroides. Although this tree does have a common name (The Golden Chain Tree) it is, I believe, just as well know by its Latin name. It is very popular and can be found in many gardens, and here at Burnby Hall Gardens we have several just coming into flower.
A native of southern and central Europe, it is a small irregular shaped tree with a weeping appearance and racemes of bright yellow flowers that hang down from the branches in late spring and early summer.
Laburnums are part of the Fabaceae or Legume family which also includes sweet peas and peas and, if you look closely at the flowers, you will see a similarity.
The bark is quite distinctively smooth with a green-brown colour.
The young branches of Laburnum are flexible and this, along with the way in which the racemes of flowers trail down, make Laburnum ideal for training over a frame to form an arch. While this takes patience and time to achieve, if done well it rewards with impressive, flower-lined tunnel for two or three weeks in May.
We don’t have a Laburnum tunnel, but this does not detract from the trees we do have. They make an impressive sight when in flower.
