Earlier this week, staff at BuroHappold’s Bath Office went out plogging (picking up litter and jogging) for the second time, part of a global trend that started in Scandinavia a couple of years ago.
According to participants, plogging is a win-win experience - a combination of fitness and sociability that has a positive impact on the immediate environment and helps contribute to a sustainable future. (Apparently, plogging uses up 10% more calories than mere jogging!)
Our plo...ggers planned this week’s lunchtime outing in support of World Cleanup Day (15 September). Teams of BuroHappold runners and walkers targeted several areas of Bath, including the new Riverside seating area opposite our office and the towpath in both directions.
“It was impressive how much stuff we came back with. Each team had a full binbag from their 30 mins of plogging. It would be great to think we may have inspired one or two people to drop less rubbish or even just bin it!” James Carrick, Environmental Consultant.
The ploggers felt so good about what they’d achieved, we’re hoping this will now become a regular event.

In 30 days time five of our engineers will be travelling to Panama with the international non profit Bridges to Prosperity and @PCLConstruction to build a 200ft footbridge bridge for a rural community in the Santa Fe region.
Stable infrastructure, specifically footbridges, can increase access to education for children by 12%, access to employment for women by 18%, and access to healthcare can increase by 24%. We're excited to be using our engineering skills to help those most in and hope that you will follow our story on Twitter and our other social media platforms.

With traffic responsible for the deaths of more than 1.25 million people worldwide, and another 20-30 million injuries, the need to improve road safety is higher than ever.
To achieve the vision of an easy to use app that could make a significant impact, BuroHappold collaborated with Zendrive. ZenDrive provided us with information collected from drivers in New York to use as sample data.
Using this data, we used our SmartVis software developed by our SMART team to analyse it. The software provides an interactive dashboard that displays driving behaviour data as clickable points on a map and makes it possible to track correlations and highlight potential issues.

The Xiqu Centre is to be featured on the new HK$100 note, due to be issued in 2019.
The stunning cultural centre is the first major venue at West Kowloon, and will be the destination to experience the best of Chinese opera from Hong Kong and around the world.
Seven specialist teams have been involved in the project, including structural and specialist fire engineers, people flow analysis experts, and sustainability/BEAM Plus consultants.
... Duncan Pescod, CEO of WKCDA, commented: “We are thrilled that SCB has decided to include the building into the design of the new HK$100 banknote to commemorate this defining moment in the West Kowloon development.”

Mark Brownlee, Associate Design Manager at BuroHappold and father of two, has designed and made two buddy benches for his local school, Newbridge Primary School in Bath. BuroHappold was delighted to cover the cost of the materials as part of our UK Giving activities.
Also known as friendship benches, buddy benches encourage community and friendship in school playgrounds. They are somewhere a child can go if they are feeling shy or lonely. They can also be used to combat bully...ing.
Over the past few years, more and more schools have decided to get a buddy bench, and Newbridge wanted to get some, too. To save the school money, Mark volunteered to design and make the benches himself, asking BuroHappold if the practice would be prepared to cover the costs. We were very pleased to be able to help as part of our UK Giving activities, which aim to strengthen our local communities and promote how engineering contributes to society.

Now that the World Cup is over - and before you put football right out of your mind for the summer - please would you take our fan experience survey? We are keen to find out what fans - the people who go to stadiums on a regular basis - think about their experiences.
We've created this quick online survey to help us with our research into how stadium performance can be transformed: https://buro.im/2IvD1He
The more responses we get, the better, so please share it with your friends, too. Thank you for your help.

Sochi's Fisht Stadium has hosted several 2018 World Cup matches, including last night’s exciting quarter-final between Russia and Croatia. Described as one of the top, most attractive stadia in the competition, its form echoes its coastal and mountainous surroundings.
Working with Populous, we designed the stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Our brief: a high performance, sustainable stadium, offering the safest and best spectator experience, able to withstand the extreme e...nvironment.
It also needed to be adaptable - and for the World Cup, temporary seating has been added to the two open ends to increase capacity. https://buro.im/2KBbqKW

Take our fan experience survey and help make the stadiums of the future better for fans!
BuroHappold’s Venue Performance Team is a group of sports fans who are passionate about making stadiums as good as they can possibly be for everyone – clubs, players and fans.
Science is already being used to transform player performance. Now at BuroHappold we are pioneering the use of science to transform stadium performance, too.
... Our next step is to find out what fans really think. We’ve created a quick online survey, which will only take a few minutes. But those few minutes will be a big part of making the stadiums of the future the best they can possibly be for fans.
Take the survey now: https://buro.im/2IvD1He - and please share it with your friends: the more responses we get, the stronger our conclusions will be. Thanks!
