It’s all starting to take shape. Concept to creation. Progress and perfection. It’s been a journey planning and developing our new space in the yard; new workshops, studios, apartments and now the next transformation taking place in the far end of the yard. The idea being that we’re creating a purpose built office suited to a creative team, startups or someone looking for a space that has more character than your average 8x8 and 4walls. We’ve had some developments in the new workshop space. New machinery, new tools, more storage space and of course new members in our community. Things are starting to take shape and we’ve got got new spaces becoming available, but only 1x workbench currently available in the new workshop. This is Adam from Ar Woodwork . Adam is an integral part of our community here, not only did he help facilitate in the actual development of the new Workshop Spaces by connecting the power, but he’s an irreplaceable part of what makes this environment what it is. Sharing in healthy conversations around design, build, art and functionality; he absolutely brings a presence and support to the shared working environment that we have here. . In a nutshell Adam builds bespoke fitt...ed furniture working on a mixture of solid wood and wood panels. Adam builds furniture that will last forever, that is not only made to bespoke specifications but can also travel with the client to their new home if needs be. . Inspired by Vintage and Modern influences, Adam likes to connect work from 50’s, retro and contemporary styles to make work that lasts a lifetime. . He talks about how this shift in “retro” styling has brought around a change in the appreciation of materials used, especially as his clients are, now, more willing to pay for higher quality design, materials and finishing; to get something that will last a lifetime. . HONE brings a sense of community for Adam, close friendships with people cut from the same cloth; interested in design, art, quality and community. This is Brian. . He’s somewhat of a legend in the yard. A man who can really spin a yarn and have you laughing at every twist and turn. A genuine soul and very generous person. He’s a woodworker come artist, with a heritage of working on a farm with his father, he grew up using his spare time to work any object into something stunning. His work; having been used as art-deco installations in the most modern of houses, turns out he’s also incredibly skilled in carpentry. . He...’s currently renovating the “live-in-studios” as well as repairing and restoring much of the existing building at the back of the yard; which will have its own canal side access and soon to be the ideal location for a tech start-up or design based agency. . The new balcony going in for our three live/work studio’s. We built this in reclaimed sleepers to give an aged feel. The main joists are slotted in with a light timber pegs to give some detail and contrast.

Using Traditional joinery, hand tools and timber they make contemporary furniture that would sit comfortably in someone’s home as much as it would belong in a gallery. . With inspirations ranging from Hans Wegner to Kaare Klint, they themselves aim to inspire with their own design collection, whilst pioneering their own practices and design ethos: “To recognise the value in the process of how a piece of furniture is made, as well as the finished product...each piece telling a unique story of how it was made.” . In their own words they say “We make contemporary wooden furniture using traditional methods with a particular interest in vernacular forms. Our aim is to connect the tree and hand with the finished piece of furniture. Often the furniture celebrates the textures left by our hand tools and methods; we want our furniture to tell the story about how it came to be.” . Aiming to hold open workshops and exhibitions in their new workshop, their aim is to develop their workshop to be a beautiful and inviting space reflective of the high end work they themselves produce. . It goes without saying that their work is of the highest tier and not one, but two, pieces of furniture have been shortlisted for an award at this years Wood Awards. The work will be exhibited at 100% Design in confluence with London Design Festival this September. .
