The Common Buckeye is a common sight in parks and gardens across North America during the summer and autumn months.
Their large eyespots are thought to deter predators, much like those on our native Peacock butterfly. #AutumnWatch @BBCSpringwatch

How cute is this Rosy Maple?! Native to the US, they are perhaps one of the prettiest of moths with their candy-coloured coat and cuddly appearance.
Can be seen in forests across New England but venture into urban gardens, where they feed on Maple. #AutumnWatch BBC Springwatch

A moth native to southern Europe and North Africa, the Vestal is an immigrant species, arriving in southern England in varying numbers each autumn. In good years, several hundred may appear, and some may turn up almost anywhere in Britain. #AutumnArrivals

Have you ever seen a Monarch butterfly? #AutumnWatch
The Monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a rare migrant to the UK but remains one of the world's most iconic butterflies, their vivid patterning of black and orange is familiar across continents.
It is not just the beauty of these butterflies that has captured our imaginations but the truly magnificent 3,000 mile migration made by a single 'super' generation of North American Monarchs.
... Heading south to escape the freezing winters, the butterflies produce a spectacular natural phenomena, arriving around November time every year in their tens of millions to the Sierra Madre oriental mountains in Mexico.
The immense cloud of wings settle together within the forests until the following spring, then producing a succession of generations that must make the mammoth journey back!

The Luna moth (Actias luna) is native across North America and Canada but is rarely seen due to their very brief (7–10 day) adult lives and nocturnal flying time. #AutumnWatch @BBCSpringwatch
