Café Indie Description

OPENING TIMES. . .

Tuesday 10am-4pm
Wednesday 10am-4pm (plus evening events! )
Thursday 10am-4pm (plus evening events! )
Friday 10am-4pm (unless a gig is on - there probably is)
Saturday 10am-4pm (unless a gig is on - there probably is)
Sunday - closed.

Funded by the Big Lottery, Café INDIEpendent is a coffee and music house.

So, by day we sell the finest coffee and deli quality sandwiches. We have a large, interactive children's area and masses of space for all ages to sit and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

In the evening, we become an arts venue - hosting gigs, exhibitions, film screenings and plentiful artistic occurrences. Please see our website or in house promotional material to see what's coming up. And we keep on serving food and coffee too.

But, underpinning all this, the Cafe is an employability project for young people. We work with disadvantaged young people on a program of work experience, formal and non-formal training and never forget that our young volunteers are our primary reason for being. Sometimes our customers do, so please remember the person serving you is most likely a volunteer, here for their own development and you can play a role in that.

And finally, upstairs. . . . We've developing a Social Enterprise Incubator Unit and training space. This will provide further opportunities for the development and progression of our young volunteers. This will be our ideas workshop.

We're going for quality over quantity this week. Not as much going on, what with Christmas just around the corner, but what events we do have will be even more heaps of fun than usual to make up for it!
MONDAY is all about us lending a helping hand to anyone that's struggling. The lovely folks from Network Cafe have their usual mental health drop-in 1:30-4pm and our youth club will be hanging out 5:30-7:30 and having plenty of Christmassy fun. TUESDAY 6-8pm we have Swing Danc...e Scunthorpe here to teach you some slick moves so you can show off at New Years parties and such FRIDAY 8 til late we have Bass Sick Manuvaz holding their last ever drum & bass night in Scunny. We have no doubt they'll make it a night to remember. SATURDAY we have a little pop-up craft fair from noon for anyone still searching for that perfect present. Then, once the sun goes down, we have the lovely ladies of The Fainting Couch holding their terrific cabaret and burlesque night from 7-11pm.

We're not quite sure what this furry tentacle is, or where it came from, it just grew out of the wall one day. You'll be fine though so long as you keep out of its way and don't try to feed it houmous

We don't normally open on a Sunday, but we're hosting a party later, and we're always up for a party. Especially when it's for Scunthorpe Ladies Rugby club. If you ever fancy having a get-together of your own with us then all you have to do is ask!

Ah Christmas; a time for giving, for good will to all men... and for these SICK BEATS awwww yeeeeeah! Bass Sick Manuvaz will be here on Friday 21st with a whole host of DJs. It's gonna be their last time here in Scunthorpe and they will undoubtedly be going out with a bang. Just £3 on the door.

If I could be anything on the Indie menu it'd probably be one of our tasty wraps, as it would be like the food equivalent of spending my entire existence snuggled in a duvet

What better way to welcome the weekend than with Wet Records Christmas Party tonight! There'll be awesome DJ sets from these cool cats - Higher Rhythm and BHS International - and it's the perfect chance to let your hair down and have a boogie with us. 8 til late, £3 on the door. Just bring your dancing shoes and Christmas spirit and we'll provide the rest.

An 'emo' and a 'chav'. One of the things we love about this cafe is how it can break down barriers and get people talking to each other who wouldn't usually. These two used to shout at each other in the street. 'You're an emo' the little one would say, and 'you're a chav' the big one would shout back, neither of them too sure what these stereotypes mean. Well, after both visiting the cafe, bumping into each other, sounding each other out and eventually chilling together, they've looked beyond appearances and found they can get along. And actually, they both think the other is kinda alright. And it's difficult not to try on a faux fur jacket and yellow shades.
Doesn't take much sometimes, just an environment where everyone is made to feel welcome and stereotypes don't exist.

Any fellow milk swirlers here? It's just so hypnotic, and you get to pretend you're mixing a magic potion!

Behold vegan friends, we have all sorts of yummy grub in store for you tomorrow! 😋

The North Pole gets all the attention just lately, what with Santa's workshop and all, so our friend from the South Pole has been feeling left out. Be sure to show Penguin some love and give him a hug when you next visit.

We did have a whole Simpsons style song planned about our upcoming burlesque night, but spontaneous songs don't work like they do on tv. While we've been distracted with musical numbers, tickets for The Fainting Couch on Saturday the 22nd have nearly sold out! Better get in quick if you want to be part of the fun.

Our bakers were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think whether they should... and we're glad they didn't, otherwise we wouldn't have this beauty. Apple pie covered in caramel ❤️

Now that we're in a suitably festive spirit, it's high time we tackled the burning holiday question: is Die Hard a Christmas film?

User

We had a fabulous time last night at #AnIndieKindaChristmas and now we get to do it all over again today! Be sure to pop down between 10 and 4 if you feel like getting in the Christmas spirit 🎅⛄️🎄

We played here with the Moods on the 8 th night of UK your, what an amazing and totally cool indie venue. Fantastic layout, great sound set up, cafe and music venue and social hub all in one. Great staff and wet records put on a wonderful night. Puts Scunthorpe on the UK live music map with this wonderful place. Thanks for a great night.

This place is a gem! I love the ethos of the organisation & the staff genuinely can't do enough for you - and the styling is pretty damn cool too! Love the knitting group, love the suspended coffee scheme & love the fact that Cafe Indie has become a Co op! The staff have a great attitude towards inclusivity with regards to customers who have a disability, and have in the past helped me with stuff that's cropped up. You will get a genuinely warm welcome at every visit & I can personally recommend the coffee & the blueberry tea! We are very lucky to have this place in this town, very lucky indeed!

I had my birthday party at Cafe Indie last Saturday. Before the event, the staff were very helpful and happy to help me plan to get it just right. Everyone really enjoyed the party - the venue, the food and the lovely staff. Some had never been there before but will return. Thank you David, Tom and everyone else who made it so memorable. I highly recommend holding an event there.
