Here at Cambridge the Diabetes Research team led by Dr Mark Evans seeks to improve the quality of life of our patients by striving to understand the aetiology of the disease and potential new targets for effective treatment. Our work to help develop new therapies, treatments and technology are continually helping to improve clinical outcomes and safety. Our work increasingly focuses on common treatments used in both Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is the most common severe chronic autoimmune disease worldwide and the incidence of the disease is rising rapidly. Type 1 diabetes causes the immune system to mistake cells in the pancreas as harmful and attack them. When these cells are damaged the pancreas is unable to produce insulin, which plays an essential role in transferring glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells to be converted into energy. The management of type 1 diabetes usually involves measuring the amount of glucose in the blood and injecting artificial insulin to make up for the insulin the pancreas is not producing.

Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent than autoimmune (Type 1) diabetes and globally affects more than 8% of adults. It results from the body’s ineffective production or use of Insulin and is commonly associated with excess body weight or inactivity but its onset is multifactorial and often not detected until sometime after onset exposing patients to increased risk of vascular and neurological complications.
