Cambridge Dons Goalball Club Description

The Cambridge Dons are a Goalball team formed in early January 2012. We now train every other Sunday at Cherry Hinton Village Center 12: 00-15: 00. However, please get in touch to make sure we are training as the Sundays we train can vary.

Although goalball is a paralympic sport played by the blind and visually impaired, domestically it can be played by anyone from totally blind to fully sighted as everyone plays with blackout shades.

Two teams of three take it in turns to roll a ball with bells in it across a court 18m by 9m in order to score in the goal that stretches the full width of the court. Meanwhile the defending team dives across the court to cover as much as possible in order to block the ball. The sport can get quite fast as the team has 10 seconds to return the ball from the first point of defence.

Our team was founded in January 2012 and we currently have 2 teams, a novice team and an intermediate team. Our members range from 11 to 42. We have competed in a number of tournaments since we were formed; our best performances as of 08 /04 /2014 are 1st at novice level and 4th at intermediate level. In the 2013 /14 goalball season we have entered every goalball tournament the club is eligible for and a few of our players have also entered intermediate north tournaments as an individual.

We are always willing to have more people try this out. Just pop along to join in with the disorientating good fun!
