Cambridge-Jic Igem Team 2015 Description

This year, the Cambridge-JIC team has chosen the Hardware Track for the 2015 iGEM competition. Our project is designed to address the need for high quality and cheap microscopes for use in labs. This is of particular need in laboratories with small budgets, as well as schools and universities. Fluorescence microscopy is ubiquitous in modern biological research, but current imaging hardware is too expensive to be used in these areas. We are therefore working to develop open-source fluorescence and brightfield microscopes, with a particular focus on 3D printing and low-cost components.

Our team is made up of 10 undergraduate students at Cambridge, supervised by PhD students and academic staff and led by Prof Jim Haseloff. We study many different subjects, with specialities in biochemistry, engineering, physics, medicine and computer science.
