Up in the air for a view of Picton's crossing of the River Coa above Sabugal.
Onwards to the French perspective at Les Arapiles 1812. We have some rather interesting angles in store for our next #PeninsularWar tour.
British Cemetery, #Elvas. A scene of calm reflection. Perhaps the most affecting placque is that commemorating the sad demise of Lt.Col Bevan, whose story is neatly surmised by @LynnBry29527024 here https://buff.ly/2Mh6siX
#Badajoz 1812. View from Fort San Cristobal across the River Guadiana to the castle and city. It was here that the extremely capable General Philippon surrendered the day after the storming.
These stunning #Roman bridges! #Merida #PeninsularWar.
On private tour. An interestingly different and very telling perspective on #Talavera. Many special vistas lined up for our 2019 tours. #PeninsularWar
More Romans. Back in Spain with a view half way across the gargantuan Roman bridge at #Alcantara. The strategic implications of holding and/or destroying these bridges, both military and political, were enormous.
Looking into the valley, scene of Colborne's desperate scene with the 66th against the Polish Lancers at #Albuera 1811. Consdering his experience here, it makes his flank attack action with the 52nd at #Waterloo even more commendable!
Looking up before marching up with the @GuildofBG on the Lesser Arapile, Battle of #Salamanca 1812.
#Salamanca 1812. The opening event. Gorgeous landscape.
#PeninsularWar Ciudad Rodrigo in the early morning light from the Greater Teson. Siege warfare 1810 & 1812. #Massena v #Wellington
Always evocative. #Almeida fortress. Under siege 1810 when the powder magazine within the medieval castle, within the star fortress, ignited 4000 prepared charges, 68,000 kg of black powder and 1,000,000 musket cartridges. #PeninsularWar
Battle scars on the face of the Cathedral, Ciudad Rodrigo. Witness to French & British siege damage. #PeninsularWar
Ciudad Rodrigo is about far more than #Wellington's successful siege. The French had to take it first, valiantly defended alone by the Spanish in 1810. #PeninsularWar
Continuing on tour, now with veterans of @GuildofBG enjoying Ciudad Rodrigo. #PeninsularWar. Twinkling stars.
Our favourite #wine hotel. Thinking of adding a 1945 bottle opening here to the itinerary for next year's #Peninsularwar tour ... yes that's right, #1945. A truly astounding vintage in so many ways. Tasting real history! What say you?
Stunning. Worth the trip alone ... #architecture #wine #landscape #history. More than just battlefield tours!
Incredible landscapes. Exceptional colours. On tour. En-route to stay and dine in the building where #Napoleon rested during his incursion into Spain. Living and sharing great history!
On private tour. Battle of #Vittoria 1813. This shot combining rustic architecture & wildlife rather appealed!
We had a wonderful 10 days with Gareth and Robert in Portugal (and a bit of Spain). Historical insights, cultural treasures, good food and accommodation, what more could you want? My wife, who's not into military history normally, said she found it more interesting that she expected.
