I was asked this week - Whats a Mooring? Its a place along the river or canal where you tie up a boat to the land with your ropes when you have finished cruising for the day. Some people also call it a berth. The picture is of Ella and Mum moored, waiting for the lock at Meaford.
Teaching rope cheesing to my sister.
I've been asked this morning what's a Morse? No its not the detective, or any dots and dashes. Its the control lever which is connected to the gearbox with cables that makes the gearbox turn the propellor back/forth or fast and slow. It can be mechanical or hydraulic.
What's a Skeg: a tapering or projecting aft section of a vessel's keel. Thats the proper description. In my terms - Its the bit that sticks out under the water which holds the rudder, where the rudder cup sits and is welded to. Iain Jones Marine Surveyor kindly point it out.
Tumblehome? Boat builders come up with some funny names! Its the bit above the top rubbing rail before the ledge you walk on at the bottom of the cabin side. Don't forget we have availablity for Overnight tasters and day hire. Why not give us a call on 01785 813982
Whats the Swans neck? no not the neck on a bird. Its the 'S' shaped bar which attaches to the top of the rudder, then you attach the tiller arm to this. Dom checking the bearings on the top of the rudder.
Whats a draft? No its not that breeze from the crack in the wall or from the window. Its the part of the boat under water. The measurement from the water line to the bottom of the boat. Charlie mapping out a toilet tank for a private boat.
Check out our new page - work in progress/under construction - https://www.canalcruising.co.uk/handover- instructions/ The picture is of Josh at Meaford Locks this winter in a dewatered lock.
Question- Whats a propellor? Well they come in different sizes with 3 blades (usually), and each blade is set at an angle called a pitch. The higher the pitch the better the boat moves in the water. But If the prop is too small for the engine and the length of the boat its called under propped. #askusaboatquestion⚓⚓

What an amazing holiday! Thank you so much! Boat was really well equipped and had everything we needed. We had a great handover from Dominic. It was the first holiday on a narrow boat and we were a bit nervous when we saw the size of it but Dominic really put us at ease. The children (age 5 & 8) loved it!! We'll definitely be back! Thank you.
We rented the Agnes for 11 days in September 2014 and had a wonderful cruise on the canals. The Agnes was great narrowboat, perfect for the two of us. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The owners were great and really made it a memorable experience.

We have just got back from a short cruise on Agnes . We would like to thank all at Canal Cruising for making our holiday so enjoyable and stress free . We are particularly grateful to Karen for her kind and flexible attitude when we had to cancel our first holiday ( due to illness) in September . This is a professional company whose boats are to the highest standard and who are prepared to go the extra mile to ensure their customers have a happy and hassle free holiday . Highly recommended
This is a truly wonderful family run company who know how to look after their customers. We were very well looked after and couldn't fault the boat or the staff. We'll be back
Thank you so much for the wonderful short break we had on Olivia Ginger. What a beautiful and well equipped boat she was. We were well impressed and it was the best boat we have ever been on. Our grandchildren had a whale of a time. One of them had never been on a narrowboat before and They both want to do it again.
Superholiday on Maria
Not a holiday but a repair to our engine. Very helpful and attended to us right away. Cannot recommend enough. Thank you Charlie and team for dropping everything and sorting us out.
Nice family business, friendly and efficient. We had the Olivia Ginger for a week last week and had a very enjoyable time with our friends. The Caldon canal was a delight, lots of beautiful scenery, wildlife & canalside pubs. Also no charge for fuel unlike most competitors. Highly recommended
Just spent a long weekend away on Angela, one of the smaller, 2-berth boats. Had a brilliant time and thoroughly recommended - will definitely be back again.
Boat was lovely and the initial driving lesson - including using a couple of locks - was really useful.
Everyone at the boatyard was really friendly and helpful.
Just returned from our first ever boating holiday on Rosemary. Had a good time , and had good tuition before we took over the tiler. The boats all have their own personality and was as if we were meeting family or friends when we saw another green "canal cruising" boat on our journey. Everything you need is supplied, with an excellent cooker and fridge and hot water etc. Tea and toast could easily be made in no time! Thinking about booking again,
Just had my boat, City of Durham repaired at Canal Cruising. What a fantastic job! Many thanks to Pete, Karen and team for all the help you have given us, and the superb job that you have done. The boat feels like it is brand new!!!
Just had a great few days on the canal thanks to the team
Great week on the boat, loved every minute - even in the rain.
Fantastic people highly recommended
Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. The boats are always immaculately turned out. We completed the four Counties ring and the Caldon Canal on our last trip, and are looking forward to our holiday aboard Carey this year.
Excellent service from Dominic, Karen and the team at Canal Cruising. We had a steel braced tyre (from the canal) wrapped around the propeller of our narrowboat. After a short trip to Canal Cruisings dry dock and Dominic's skill with the angle grinder we were back on our way in less than an hour. Friendly bunch too, thank you once again all! Andrea and Rob Welch.
Excellent holiday - friendly and very helpful staff.
Must do it again.
Excellent company who really care about the boats and their customers. We have booked with them for nearly twenty years now. Thank you for another great stay on Rosemary.
