Pre-habilitation prior to elective cardiac surgery is something I’m passionate about. It’s a relatively new concept in Cardiac Rehabilitation, which (as the name implies) normally focuses on the patient after their cardiac event. However, a significant number of people are aware they are going to have cardiac surgery before their procedure and it’s these people who can benefit immensely from Cardiac Pre-habilitation. This is an extract that was published online this week...... “NEW Prehab Prior to Cardiac Surgery... Stephanie Edwards, August 22, 2018 Researchers are investigating the effects of "prehabilitation," using wait times prior to cardiac surgery as an opportunity to improve postoperative outcomes... A three-pronged approach called NEW, a component of the enhanced recovery protocols (ERPs), targets nutritional status 👎, exercise capacity (E), and worry reduction (W) to support the growing number of patients undergoing complex cardiac procedures.”

Just seven weeks ago I was being woken up after six hours of open-heart surgery to replace an aortic valve that was first replaced fourteen years ago and I’m now back at work and leading a full and active life. These two cardiac experiences together with a love of fitness and the benefits it brings to us all were instrumental to me becoming a Cardiac Rehabilitator. If you, or someone you know, is about to, or has recently gone through, a cardiac procedure then Cardiac Rehabilitation will be a vital component to their good recovery and ongoing quality of life. If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever about a cardiac procedure and how it can impact your fitness and quality of life, please get in touch with me via www.cardiacrehab.co.uk
