Carding Mill Valley And The Long Mynd Nt Description

The National Trust manages over 2, 000 hectares of the Long Mynd in the Shropshire Hills. The Long Mynd is within the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it is an important place for wildlife, geology, landscape and archaeology.

There is loads to do when you get here; at Carding Mill Valley we have our tea-room and shop and here is the perfect place for families to relax, paddle in the stream and start a walk. Don't worry if the weather is bad, there's still loads to do from den building, to building a dam across the stream, just throw your wellies on and enjoy the great outdoors.

For any hardier walkers, cyclists and horse riders; Carding Mill Valley is a great starting off point, park up then head up into the hills and find your own special piece of solitude, there are miles of footpaths and bridleways across the hill to explore.

This half term we will be bringing the apple press back to Carding Mill Valley for a day of juice making. If you've got an apple glut then put the date in your diary and start collecting some containers for all the lovely liquid coming your way. #apples #juicing #shropshire #cardingmillvalley #yum

Bring your apples and turn them into the best tasting juice ever. Our friends from Stretton Climate Care will be in charge of the apple press to help you turn your fruit into liquid gold. Fifteen minute slots will be available to book on the day. Just turn up with your apples, book in and then enjoy some apple cake from our tea-rooms or a walk on the haill while you wait for your turn.

It's been a great day to feel the sun on your back and enjoy these wonderful views. We're hoping for more of this tomorrow. If you are lucky all you'll hear will be the rush of the river. And relax...

Look out for short-eared owl if you are out on the hills over the next couple of weeks. It's an occasional visitor to the Long Mynd and this one was spotted near Boiling Well recently. Many thanks to an anonymous source for this photo.

We have a free walk tomorrow led by our ranger team. Meeting in the Batch Valley they will introduce you to our lovely Hebridean sheep. No need to book, just be in the Batch Valley car park at 10am. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/…/67c3 aee4-2…/pages/details

Our shop volunteers love to help people find just the thing they're looking for, and they help us to raise much needed funds to look after the Shropshire Hills. We really need some more volunteers in our shop, so if this sounds like the role for you please pop in or follow this link to fill in an enquiry form: https://bit.ly/2xe9kHm

#fungusfriday returns with an early autumn specimen. This one was found just above Lightspout waterfall today by one ofour learning team. It seems the dry summer hasn’t stopped some beauties showing themselves. Get out on the hills and send us some shots of any you find this weekend.

As a heathland the Long Mynd hasn’t got a lot of trees so autumn colour comes in a different way. The bracken is starting to die off now and the hills are starting to rust. Cow Ridge here has stripes of colour emerging. Come and enjoy it on this lovely September day.

The Long Mynd ponies are very photogenic but also very useful. Along with the sheep, they shape the landscape of the hill. Without the commoners farming these animals on the Mynd the heathland would disappear. Thanks to our learning volunteer Mike for this great shot.

Good news from our tea-rooms...they will be serving breakfast rolls from tomorrow morning. Bacon, sausage or egg sandwich/bap for £3.95, served 10am - 12pm every day. You’ll be pleased that know Tim from our welcome team has road tested them. A difficult job but he coped.

It’s starting to feel like autumn in the valley today. The air is fresh and the light is clear, a great day for a walk. Our tea-rooms are open until 5pm for warming drinks and post-stroll treats.

There’s only a handful of places left on our latest ranger talk. It’s a week today at 6pm with a soup and roll included. Booking is essential. Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd, Managing the Mynd https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/…/0e5a 7dc7-0…/pages/details

If you are out on the hills this weekend look out for the Sundew. This carnivorous plant is the county flower of Shropshire and can be found on the Long Mynd as well as Hopesay Hill where this photo was taken. Your support helps us protect habitat for plants such as the sundew.

Despite a severe toasting over the summer and an attack from the heather beetle the Long Mynd heather is looking lovely. Get out on the top of the hill to appreciate fully.

The Long Mynd is sighing with relief due to today's rain. Here's evidence of the effects of the drought on the hill. These shots were taken by a National Trust drone photographer in the last ten days. The only green comes from bracken, with shot two showing a gathering strip recently cut by our rangers. These strips help the commoners who farm the hill to gather their sheep.

We are pond dipping again today at Carding Mill Valley. Sessions at 11am and 2pm, it's £1 per child. Also, on Thursdays you can head to National Trust Wenlock Edge for their holiday activities. It's a wild woods adventure trail tomorrow, more details here. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wenlock- edge/whats-on

Wonderful place to escape the rat race. Church Stretton is a lovely place too.

Really nice place to walk or sit around on a nice day and watch the children paddle or the sheep roam about you. Friendly staff and a great little cafe/shop. We parked in the town for £3.60 for the whole day and it's about a 20 minute walk to the start of the walk. It cost £4.50 a day in the area to park but there's loads of spaces. It's a challenging walk up to the waterfall but very enjoyable. A definite visit for those who enjoy the outdoors and we will be going back very soon. Hope this helps.
