Tim Turney presented Casella’s new Flow Detective Calibrator at today’s OH2018 Product showcase. The many unique features which are built-in the Flow Detective save time and stand up to heavy rugged use.
Of particular interest was the Bluetooth connectivity which allows air sampling pump calibration results to emailed straight to user PC’s. Tim Turney said “the natural airflow oscillation during calibration can create large pulsation effects.
With cyclones it is critical to... get a good respirable cut and the Casella Flow Detective ensures that the pulsation is within ISO13137 limits of less than 10%. It also alerts if any manufacturers pump exceeds the limit”.

Leading vs. lagging indicators
It is encouraging to see that the Joint Industry Board (JIB) has launched an initiative to help safeguard the health of its 12 000 operatives in the UK electrical industry www.jib.org.uk/oha . They will be offering a funded occupational health assessment every three year which will cover ten employee wellbeing elements including respiratory function, hearing and blood pressure.
Great to see that respiratory and hearing health get ‘top billing’ b...ut, whilst health surveillance is a useful tool in the management of health and safety, it is a lagging indicator. This means that the impact of too much noise exposure and potentially toxic dusts and fumes may already have caused long term damage. Interesting that hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) caused by repeated use of power tools and the top disease reported under RIDDOR doesn’t get a mention? And whilst you may consider the electrical industry a lower risk to health (as opposed to safety) than, say mining or the oil and gas sector, there is no substitute for objective measurements of exposure using appropriate instrumentation that provide real-time, leading indicators of risk. http://ow.ly/gFbg30j1QOf

What’s in a name?
The term ‘stone deaf’ is said to have been coined amongst the underground quarrymen since Roman times. Stone workers have helped build iconic buildings like the Tower of London and St Paul’s cathedral. They stand as monuments to their hard work and sacrifice, the work being both unsafe and unhealthy. And whilst modern day quarrying is much safer, it still poses a risk to hearing, respiratory health and, due to the use of powered tools, the circulation of the... fingers, hands and arms. There is a current focus in both the UK and the USA (OSHA Silica Rule) on the health effects of #silica present in common materials used widely in construction.
Repeated exposure can lead to conditions such as silicosis, COPD and potentially lung cancer. A related condition known in the US mining sector as Black Lung, has also been reported to be on the increase amongst coal miners. All these conditions are chronic long term problems, irreversible but wholly preventable by carrying out a risk assessment and deploying appropriate control methods.
Casella can provide the measuring instrumentation to help with that risk assessment and analysis so for more information on sound level meters, noise dosimeters, vibration meters and air sampling pumps go to http://ow.ly/gFbg30j1QOf #dust #noise #vibration

Where’s the sense in that?
Have you ever been asked which of your senses you would be prepared to sacrifice?
It’s an impossible one to answer but in a workplace setting you may indeed be having your senses put at risk from potential hazards; your hearing from regular exposure to loud noise from a variety of industrial processes and feeling (touch) in the fingers and hands from repeated use of hand-operated, powered tools.
... Such exposure, if left uncontrolled, may eventually lead to chronic conditions known as noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) and hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) respectively. HAVS is a combination of two conditions i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome and vibration white finger and the latter becomes ‘obvious’ as the affected fingers gradually turn white due to restricted and eventually damaged circulation.
It is said that if our ears literally bled we might also take better care of our hearing! So rather like the true story of a young apprentice in 1977 entering a noisy factory for the first time to be told by a supervisor “don’t worry son, you’ll get used to it”, we know that it means the onset of NIHL. These conditions are irreversible but wholly preventable by carrying out a risk assessment and deploying appropriate control methods.
Casella can provide the measuring instrumentation to help with that risk assessment, so for more information on sound level meters, #noise #dosimeters, #vibration meters and air sampling pumps go to http://ow.ly/gFbg30j1QOf

The City that Never Sleeps!
Not surprising NYC doesn’t sleep if the number of complaints about noise is anything to go by. Noise pollution is an “underestimated threat,” according to the World Health Organization and recent research has linked heart health with noise exposure even at levels as low as 60dB. http://ow.ly/I4R630iBoXe
According to the NY state Controller’s office in 2017, complaints were ‘way up’ having doubled in recent years http://ow.ly/rTEn30iBoYf
... Noise from construction is cited in particular because the City has allowed noisy work to continue outside ‘normal’ #construction hours and there are calls to improve the permitting process to ensure construction crews are limiting the noise during off hours. Major world cities like London have a similar problem because of a high population density, the intensity of new construction due to high real estate values are common factors.
London has gone further with the imposition of mandatory monitoring and reporting of #noise (as well as #dust and #vibration) which can be achieved using systems like Casella’s Guardian2, a simple to install, plug and play solution with data available via a secure website http://ow.ly/kn8u30iBp0h
