In English, Year 12 students have been working on their first Speaking and Listening task of the year. They are writing a speech either about their first few weeks at college or a speech about themselves. Students are planning, drafting, writing, rehearsing then delivering their speeches over the next few weeks. Some embarked on peer assessment of their planning which including them checking that sentences were as detailed as they could be and that ideas were appropriately ordered and linked through the use of connectives.

We are delighted to announce that at the Basildon Planning Meeting on Tuesday 25th September, Castledon School and College was granted permission to expand our vocational learning area. The development will comprise of:
A single storey sixth form building, providing 123 m2 in additional floorspace, with a sloping roof being 3.8m in height at its highest point. This building will provide two additional teaching spaces. This building will also allow the school to cater for mor...e complex pupils whom the school cannot accommodate on the existing College site.
A Finnish Contemporary Lodge, providing 110 m2 in additional floorspace, with a flat roof being 3m in height. This building will provide two en-suite bedrooms, two other bedrooms and two bathrooms. The Finish Contemporary Lodge will enable the College to teach life skills in line with the academy vision ‘learn to live’ and ‘unlocking potential for adulthood’. It will teach hospitality skills for service industries. Rooms will also be developed to be like the home environment to develop small group interventions to the learn lifeskills curriculum such as cooking in a ‘home like’ environment;
A Summer House, providing 45m2 in additional floorspace, with a pitched roof with gable ends being 3.9m in height. This building will be used for vocational courses;
Male and Female changing rooms, providing 22m2 (x2) additional floorspace each, with a flat roof being 2.6m in height to service the existing sports field; and
A greenhouse, providing 46m2 additional floorspace, with a gable roof being 1.7m in height to the eves and 2.99m at its highest point. This will replace the existing greenhouse which is in a poor state of repair and inadequate for teaching purposes. This will allow the College to develop horticultural pathways further. The proposed greenhouse includes appropriate benches to enhance the learning environment and ensure facilities are ‘fit for purpose’.
The granting of this permission paves the way for an exciting expansion to the vocational offering to students to aid their journey to adulthood and employment.

This week in Maths some of the groups have visited the local supermarket to identify 3D shapes and their properties in the 'real world'. Students have also had the opportunity to measure objects in and around the school premises using tape measures. They have successfully measured in M and Cm as well as converting to other units giving them an understanding of practical Maths. Well Done All!

All the students have worked extremely hard on their base-line fitness testing over the last 2-3 weeks and are looking forward to starting in the gym next week. Here is a photo of some of the students enjoying a group team sport - playing basketball together after finishing their fitness testing.

The students are currently being introduced to various fitness tests and learning about the value of these. After participating in a variety of tests the students will move on to the gym for inductions.

After a restful summer, students were ready and raring to go! In English, students shared and exchanged personal details (including names, dates of birth and hobbies) in a bid to hone their conversational skills. They introduced themselves, asked relevant questions and listened carefully to answers. This should stand them in good stead during social times whilst they are getting to know students who are new to Castledon College.

As we welcome all the students back to college today we hope you had a lovely restful holiday. Over the next two days students will be working with their new form tutors and being inducted into college life. Please see below a link to our Basildon Council Planning Application. We are seeking to provide further teaching space for our learners on the school site. This will enable us to enhance our curriculum for our young people. Please support us by registering on the planning website and uploading a supportive comment. Everything helps!
