Cathedral Church Of St. Mary, Newcastle Upon Tyne Description

The church was built in the 1840s to a neo-Gothic design by architect August Welby Pugin, famous for his work on the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. It was paid for by halfpenny donations from the poorest community of immigrants on Tyneside, and was enhanced over the decades by generous benefactors.

You are very welcome to come in for some time of quiet prayer and to join us for one of our masses.

We are open every day (See opening hours) and there is also on site the Cloister Cafe and a shop run by Pauline Books and Media.

Our Mass times are:

Sunday 8. 00am (Spoken)
10. 00am (Cantor)
11. 30am (Solemn with Cathedral Choir)
6. 30pm (Music Group)

Monday to Friday Masses are celebrated at 8. 00am and 12. 05pm.

Mass on a Saturday is at 10. 00am.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) takes place:

Tuesday and Thursday at 5. 00pm
Wednesday and Friday after 8. 00am Mass
Saturday from 10. 30 - 11. 30am.
