I often have customers bringing me bargains they’ve bought from eBay to check over and service - just like you lot I love a bargain and I most definitely encourage the purchasing of secondhand instruments, however, it can come at a price. Take a look at picture 1, this is the image that a seller on eBay used to advertise their Jupiter 511E-II. It was advertised as being in good general condition but would benefit from a service. You can see from the image that there is a sti...cker on the top of the flute body but nothing that rings alarm bells - kids put stickers on instruments all the time, they come off quite easily and the metalwork usually just needs a clean and polish to bring it back into condition.
In picture 2 you can see a closer look at the sticker. Unfortunately this sticker once read “Property of Gwent Music support service” meaning that this instrument is in fact, stolen.
Several music services will scratch their own security numbers onto the instruments to discourage theft and for others to quickly identify a “county instrument” being sold on. For example NMPAT in Northamptonshire currently scribe a ‘Y’ number onto their instruments. However there are also lots of music services and hire companies that do not and of course privately owned instruments can also be stolen too. As potential buyers I would ask please that you check all serial numbers against the various stolen instrument databases before purchasing e.g https://www.musicalchairs.info/stolen and https://www.mia.org.uk/stolen-instruments -2/
The big Woodwind retailers Howarths, Dawkes and Sax.co.uk have all been victims of theft recently so there are increasing numbers of stolen instruments popping up in pawn shops, on gumtree and on eBay.
Check those serial numbers!

Pleased to be back at my workbench after a few months off for my MS treatment. Easing back in by prepping this lovely Buffet B12 for sale. Feels good to be back!

Additionally, two saxophones were taken from HAYES MUSIC between 12.35pm and 12.55pm on March 3. Officers investigating the theft would like to speak to the two people featured in the CCTV image.

Treatment finished, hooray!

Hello hello, just a short message to say that I will be taking a temporary break from Woodwind repair for a short time whilst I undergo some treatment in hospital for my MS. The treatment I'm about to have is designed to kill off all of my white blood cells so I will be rather knocked out and susceptible to coughs/colds etc for a month or so. I am hoping to be back fixing things by the end of March. I will more than likely be rather bored whilst I go through recovery so I've started a blog if anyone fancies keeping track of my progress. Hello all! Exciting changes this year for me as I venture into the world of self-employment and woodwind repair. As most of you know, I've been repairing instruments for a little while now but this year marks the beginning of reducing the classroom teaching and increasing the woodwind repair. Something that has only been possible thanks to the encouragement from Nick Planas who had the foresight to put me in touch with my trainer and mentor John Coppen of Coppen Woodwind (Rep...airs- Restauraciones de instrumentos de viento-madera) to whom I also owe a huge thanks for helping me to set up my own practice. I am also pleased to once again be working with the marvellous Oxfordshire County Music Service as a freelance instrument repairer for them.
At present, I am lucky enough to not need much in the way of advertisement to keep me in supply of instruments that need fixing. (Thanks to the enormous amount of recommendations from friends and colleagues for turning this into a part-time job!) The main purpose of this page is simply to keep you all up-to-date on any instruments that are for sale and to provide news of the business. I promise not to inundate you with posts that clog up your news feed!
