Our breakthrough CEF technology can create customized extracellular matrix tissue scaffolds for research use. Our 3D scaffolds are porous and fibrous and mimic the composition and architecture of the natural extracellular matrix of tissues. Our body tissues and organs are composed of cells embedded into a complex network of fibres made of proteins, sugars and water called the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM provides physical scaffolding to cells as well as biochemical and mechanical signals necessary for the correct function of our tissues and organs. The ECM is produced by cells where each tissue and organ has a unique ECM composition, with collagen being the most abundant protein found in the human ECM. For decades, scientists have tried to understand the complex interactions between cells and the ECM by fabricating ECM analogues called scaffolds, which can be difficult. Mostly, scientists work with collagen-only scaffolds as mixing different ECM components requires distinctive expertise. ECM scaffolds have become essential components in research related to tissue engineering, disease and cancer modelling, cell biology or drug screening.
