The Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technologies (SMART) is a research and development centre, formed in 2004, at Loughborough University. Our mission is to develop new strategies, tools, and technologies that encourage sustainable growth in the manufacturing industry by enabling companies to meet legislative, environmental, and ethical standards whilst safeguarding their future prosperity. The SMART team has core expertise and knowledge in life cycle analysis, sustainable design, resource and energy efficient manufacturing, end of life processing of products, and sustainable consumption and business models that are key enablers for achieving transformational change. Our work focusses on: 1. New processes and tools for the inclusion of sustainability in product and process design. 2. Resource efficient manufacturing with an emphasis on utilisation of renewable materials and energy. 3. Information management and intelligent systems to support eco-intelligent manufacture. 4. Development of novel processes and technologies for remanufacturing, reuse and recycling of products. 5. Innovative business and consumption models to support the provision of sustainable products and services.
