My Partner proposed here last night And What a magical evening we had, the rooftop terrace is simply beautiful, hidden gem, you just could not make it any better! My partner said as soon as he 1st made contact with Events Manager Jess he knew he had found the right venue as she was so helpful and made him feel at ease and all his wishes and ideas for the big night were granted. Jess was a huge help to him and she really made our night special with 5* treatment, we both felt we were really taken care of. Service was brilliant everyone was so welcoming and the whole team came over to congratulate us, we went with Jess' recommendations from the menu which exceeded our expectations - the food was delicious and the best we have ever experienced eating out. Chaophraya is now going to be our special Venue and we already cannot wait to return, Thankyou to Jess and the friendly team for our memorable Night and for going the extra mile. We just can't believe we've never been before and what we've missed out on the surroundings are gorgeous and elegant. The night was just perfect Thankyou

It's not often you go to a restaurant, have 3 courses for tea and love every single bit of each course! The food here is amazing and so are the drinks

We were served by Holly last night and she made our visit even better, the restaurant should be very happy they have such a lovely person working for them, literally nothing was too much and she genuinely smiled the whole time and looked happy to be there.

Thank you for making our date night extra lovely

I have just attended a cookery experience today and would like to thank the staff for a great morning. We watched 3 courses being cooked and then had the opportunity to cook them ourselves and even better to eat them! It's the first time I have been in the restaurant, it's a beautiful venue with fab views over Newcastle. We were all made very welcome and all learned a lot. I would definitely recommend buying this experience for yourself or as a present. Thanks again!

Despite some negative reviews here, we went along to see for ourselves as it’s one of the few Thai restaurants in the NE we hadn’t tried before. We went Sunday lunchtime and ate from the lunch menu as there were plenty of options to choose from. We had Thai dumplings and chicken satay, that came beautifully presented. For main course we had chicken Pad Thai and chicken Massaman curry with jasmine rice. Both favourite dishes so able to do a good comparison with other restaurants in Newcastle. We had one dessert, sticky toffee pudding with ginger and lemon, caramel sauce and ice cream.

All the above dishes were delicious. I’m not a lover of hot chilli dishes, but loved the subtle heat in the curry. Beautiful spice flavours, tender meat and perfectly cooked jasmine rice. The Pad Thai was also perfectly cooked and had all the usual flavours and textures you’d expect from authentic Thai cooking. As for the dessert. It was one of the nicest sticky toffee puddings I’ve ever had. I love ginger and it had the slightest hint of it that took it to another level, and not too heavy.

We had two diet cokes for drinks.

The lunch menu was a great price with a one, two and three course option. Very reasonable prices for what you got, although if having the a la Carte menu it would obviously be a lot more expensive, but worth it for a special meal. The drinks were roughly normal city centre prices.

Service was excellent, attentive, polite staff and just right timing for courses. The view of the monument area is fantastic.. we began to count Deliveroo cyclists between courses.

Overall I’d definitely recommend eating here. No complaints from us.

Bringing Thai dining to the heart of Newcastle, Chaophraya is an ideal classy spot (upstairs at the entrance to Eldon Square) to experience superb views of Greys Monument from its rooftop terrace.

Carla, our hostess on the day, pleasantly asked us where we would like to sit, outside or inside. We chose inside so we could check out the stunning interior. Everywhere you turn, Chaophraya’s beauty hits you. The ambient lighting was sublime, particularly where we were sat which was by the window. The tall elegant seats had an opulent style. Without doubt, Chaophraya looked the part. It was impossible not to be impressed.

Settled, we ordered our drinks. With many cocktail options available, we decided to go for an Alexander X and an Amazing Thailand. The Alexander X was a strong, sharp whisky and the Amazing Thailand was a sweet, pineapple infusion. They were both outstanding. We will definitely come back for more cocktails - ideal to relax with on their rooftop terrace in the summer sun.

From a brand new expansive menu, we were ready to order our starters. It was a tough choice, but we decided to go all out and try the Khun Kim Grill Satay Platter for two. Sirloin steak, sugar snap peas, moo ping, chestnut mushrooms, chicken satay, aubergine and cherry tomato skewers served with barbecue, peanut and jaew sauces. It was a fabulous sight when our dishes arrived. Sizzling vigorously, the chicken satay was a joy to behold. Five kebabs of tender marinated chunks of chicken drizzled in coconut milk making them even more alluring – they were super. The steak was just as tender and served rare, just how I prefer it. The sauces were right up there as the best sauces I’ve ever had, particularly the peanut sauce which was a wonderful combination with the chicken. They all complemented the dish well and were a triumph of variation. The accompanied kebabs of juicy chestnut mushrooms, moist aubergine and crunchy sugar snap peas were all tremendous. As starters go, you’re not getting much better.

As we were about to order our mains, I couldn’t help but notice the place filling up. Even with the place more full, Chaophraya manages to maintain a serene yet charming atmosphere. It was a difficult choice to choose from such a wonderful selection of dishes on the menu. With guidance from Carla, who was an attentive host, we decided on Weeping Tiger Sirloin Steak and Lamb Massaman Curry, with Riceberry Rice and Ceviche Scallop Chilli and Dressing Nasturniums from the Thai Reimagined choice. When our dishes came, our table was filled with exotic colours and aromas of spice. The taste of the 21-day dry-aged Sirloin Steak falling apart as the black pepper sauce oozed thick, scintillating flavours that smacked my senses into life. Succulent, caramelised, tender large pieces of meat; the slow cooked Lamb Massaman was quite simply the dish of the day. At just the correct spice level for my palate (I asked for it hotter than usual) it was curry at its finest. My mouth is salivating thinking back to it. Thailand’s own superfood, Riceberry Rice was a major surprise. Unique, deep purple, organic rice full of goodness – it was the best rice I’ve ever had. Resting on a trio of leafy beds, the Scallop was beautifully presented and was a fresh, tangy addition. Our main event was an extremely delightful revelation.

Although we had scoffed so much food, we had to attempt dessert as Chaophraya was going for gold. Again, with excellent options on offer, we decided on a Chocolate Bombe and a Chocolate Box. Yes it was very sweet. Yes it was rich. Yes it was decadent. But can I have another Chocolate Bombe please? When the salted caramel sauce was poured, I was dazzled as the bombe subtly exploded before my eyes. The peanut mousse, peanuts and toffee were perfect fillings for the mesmerising sphere. The Chocolate Box, a dark and white chocolate mousse, came with with a dollop of toasted coconut ice-cream and an intimate dash of berry sauce. The smoothness of the mousse combined with the coconut ice-cream was beautiful. Chaophraya can do desserts. In fact, Chaophraya can do cuisine!

In essence: the setting, the location and particularly the food at Chaophraya is top notch – it offers a special, luxurious dining experience. If you’re still deciding what to do today, go and try Chaophraya out – it’ll blow your mind.

Awesome setting, quality decor in the heart of the city, we had the set menu it was very tasty and a great friendly service.

User

Absolutely amazing food yesterday afternoon!! We popped for lunch and place was just nicely busy. I asked to swap the fish to chicken in the yellow curry and this was not a problem.....and this was the most tastiest yellow curry I've ever had!! We both were extremely impressed with the quality and taste of our food, and the atmosphere and decor is lovely. We will be coming back in the future....soon I hope!!!!

User

We visited for lunch. The food was by no means poor, just nothing to write home about. I like my Thai food spicy, and was disappointed to find no hint of spice in any part of the meal. Partner had Thai Green Curry, which was tasty and full of flavour, but about as hot as an Indian Korma. I had a crispy pork and chicken dish, where the pork wasn't at all crispy, but again tasty.

The surroundings are elegant and the views around the Monument are terrific.

Prices are ok, but I thought portions were small.

The thing that lets this place down is the service, which is incredibly slow. Very hard to catch anybody's eye for anything. Had to ask for the bill twice. Had to ask to pay by card twice. Two courses took well over an hour to arrive at the table with a big gap between courses.

Would I go back? Yes, but I wouldn't hurry.

User

Unorganised service, asked by three staff about drink's, complementary crackers. But when there was a problem with mains or trying to get bill five minute struggle to get attention.

Kitchen staff need to get portion quality right. Two bits of Tofu in the Tofu Pad Thai Noodles. Yes floor staff removed from bill and apologised but realistically shouldn't have left the kitchen.

User

Fab food , enjoyed it so much, service was great and knowledgeable friendly staff. Would highly recommend. Can’t wait for my next visit

User

Was disappointed last night especially for the money. First time here and won't be going back. Ordered steak and sticky rice. The rice was too sticky I couldnt even cut it with a knife and fork and the 2 sauces served with it weren't very nice at all.

My daughter ordered the plum chicken off the kids menu. Her last piece there was a hair under it!

My partner had ordered the belly pork. The chef had misheard the waiter saying less spicy for more spicy! He stupidly still ate it! (The waiter apologised)

Then dessert I ordered sticky toffee pudding to be told there wasn't any. So I ordered the chocolate bombe. It was nice enough but the bowl had 2 big chips missing from the side. Very disappointed

User

Unfortunately my friend and I were disappointed on our first visit yesterday. Our mains order came super quick, too quick for it to have been cooked fresh. My chicken with plum sauce was below average. The chicken strips in breadcrumbs were not tender, in fact they were tough and chewy around the edges (almost impossible to do with chicken unless you've microwaved it). The plum sauce lacked flavour. My friend thought her prawn dish not as good as her local takeaway. The coconut rice was good.

The service was ok but no one asked us if the meals were ok. The coffee machine wasn't working, nor were the hand dryers and there was no soap in the ladies I used. I genuinely think, like some of the other restaurants in this bit of Eldon Square, customers money is paying for the rates (which I know for a fact are very high), the interior decor and other overheads. The food quality is secondary.

Pretty poor experience all round this evening - from wait staff and bar tenders not knowing anything about the wine selection to reheated chicken that was dry as a bone in my main - which had a total of 8 cashews - a bit disappointing as they were billed as a main ingredient.

It was obvious that the same dry chicken was served in a different sauce to my father in law, just added to the pan to reheat at the end. The Sticky Rice was overcooked and under seasoned. Side plates were delivered hot 25 minutes before the meal arrived and therefore were cold when the food came. Mains arrived on freezing cold plates.

The vegetables side dish had undercooked carrot and broccoli, perfectly cooked asparagus and overcooked pak choi. Seemed like it was all thrown in a wok at once and hope for the best.

Hand dryer in the men's toilets was broken and with no alternative available - when we mentioned this we were told they were waiting for engineers - and they'd put some paper towels in. Dunno why they hadn't checked and thought about this throughout the day - hopefully kitchen staff/wait staff had access to hand drying facilities.

Good points - perfectly cooked prawns in the Chaophraya plater, which also had a very nice crispy meat salad. Sous Vide lamb with Aubergine was fantastic all round. Sea Bass was well cooked.

Won't be back after this experience - the whole place has a fantastic high end feel, but is let down by lacklustre training of the wait staff and shortcuts in the kitchen.

User

I wouldn't say it was the best Thai meal there are places in town that are probably more authentic and family run with better service and looked after from the beginning to end. ...... The service was the let down especially the girl serving drinks. Tbh this place probably just thrive on clients that will try once and never return as the service is appalling. The price you pay for food and drink is not in line with the service.

User

I rarely review but we have been several times and was surprised how run down the place is. Only 3 waitresses and a delay of an hour to have food made. Felt huge sympathy for waitresses who were clearly doing their best! I ordered my usual jungle curry to find it bland and without any spice. Carpets need changing! My 7 year old son wants to go there for his birthday soon - suspect we will convince him to go somewhere else! A real shame - used to really enjoy this restaurant!

User

Food was lovely abit pricey for what you get and the service wasn’t to the standard you expect, was seated with menus but we didn’t get a children’s menu so just thought there wasn’t one , she came to take order which was hard work had to repeat about 5 times then I asked if they could do a kids meal and then she said yes I’ll get you the menu then still took order wrong once to had viewed the menu, they they got the bill wrong don’t think I would return due to the service even tho food was lovely

User

We booked a table for my mams birthday , i had really high expectations menu looked lovely . When we arrived our table had a lovely view . Service was very slow took approx 15 minutes to take our drink order . Food then eventually came , starters which are normally my favourite part of the meal were a complete let down couldn’t eat the chicken satay as it was preformed bits of chicken , crab and prawns were very greasy . Mains were average apart from the chicken in plum sauce which was over cooked and very dry and the waitress split the plum sauce so had to bring another one . We were never asked at any point of our meal if we had enjoyed it ! As we were leaving the girl who greeted you was stood texting on her mobile and didn’t once look up to acknowledge we were leaving never mind speak to us . Very disappointed with the food and service , unfortunately don’t think we will be returning .

User

I've dined here many times before but last nights experience has likely put me and the rest of my party off.

We ate from the set menu, which at an average of about £35 a head was crazy for the paltry amount of food supplied. We quite literally had to go somewhere afterwards for more food.

Service was very poor.. The young lad serving us was doing his best but was clearly overstretched and having one guy run the entire bar was madness resulting in us having to constantly remind them about forgotten drinks.

They then had the nerve to add £50 service charge to our bill.

It's unfortunate that they have used the Christmas menu to milk me for as much money as possible but I doubt that the ten of will ever return so it's probably backfired.

User

I rarely write reviews but it would be remiss of me not to for this place. Went here Monday gone and the experience was very bad at the time and worse afterwards. On entry we were not given a choice of seat, and instead ushered to a one more inclined to give the visual appearance of a busy restaurant to an outsider looking in. I initially ordered a pint of lager. My first in a while so was looking forward to it, but was told there was no draft lager available but they had 330ml bottles instead (meaning if I did want to enjoy an actual pint with my meal it would cost £8.40 for the privilege). The bottle when it arrived was barely cold never mind chilled. My better half ordered the beef panang and I ordered the tofu version. The tofu was, poorly drained, completely unseasoned, barely cooked and appeared to have just been bought from a wholesaler, roughly sliced, and chucked in there (vaguely warmed through). There are local takeaways near mine who even make their own highly tasty tofu and charge you a third of the price. Resultingly I left most of the tofu and to their credit they did ask why I'd left it and duly took it off the bill. Following the visit however, both my partner and I both had similar upset stomach symptoms for two days afterwards and the panang sauce was the only thing we'd eaten the same. Not pleasant at all. As I say, I'm not normally one for reviews, but it was very poor here as an overall experience. Nice views though.
