Charlestown Friends Description

The Historic Port of Charlestown offers the unique experience to see what life was like on the sailing ships of a bygone era.

Step on board and explore our trading ketch to learn about cargoes of the past, see what conditions were like for an 18th Century sailor and even pull a rope or two!

Charlestown itself has a rich history, from the bronze age settlements nearby and the importance of maritime trade, right through to the present day as a film set.

The Pirates are back! Take cover everyone! The grog swillin’, cutlass fightin’, flintlock and cannon firing, ... and even WORSE!... yes, EVEN WORSE! .... SHANTY SINGING! 🤪 The one (alright 25) the only Pirates of St Pirin are in Charlestown Harbour this Sunday from noon! BEWARE!! Aarrrgghh!

Just to say... if you didn’t know, we’ve reduced the prices for admission to the harbour and The Kajsamoor for a while to just £3 for adults, £2.50 concessions, £1.50 children 10 to 16, and children FREE! EVERYONE who has visited us recently has exclaimed what brilliant value it is and great fun too! Coming to Charlestown, the jewel of Cornwall and not visiting the harbour and our tall ship is like fish with no chips! It can’t stay at this price much longer so please take advantage now!

User

Thanks to all our friends of St.Austell who came on board the Kajsamoor last night and to the fabulous Pirates of St.Piran who entertained in their usual wonderful way! Also the great talk given by Barry West. A great night had by all!

Why are people complaining about the price?! You can visit and pay nothing! You only pay to go on the tall ships, which seems fair, but you can see them, walk around the harbour, onto the beaches, fish, explore the caves, walk up the cliff path to the viewpoint, explore the little shops, picnic etc etc all for free!

Just enjoyed a week here and loved every second.

User

What a beautiful little harbour, full of fabulous places to eat. The visit to the tall ship was so interesting and the guide so informative and friendly. Then we went to the Shipwreck Museum which was fascinating. Rounded off with wonderful live music to close Regatta week, excellent !!

User

Well worth a visit. Some lovely craft shops as well as the port itself. Superb restaurants (we tried the Longbarn and Wreckers), a little pricey but good value for money as food was exceptional.

Overall a nicely balanced port. Not too commercialised with a few shops, historic interest and beach.

We had a great day out to see Charlestown, and learnt a lot about the tall ships, old port and what it would feel like to be on the high seas, curtesy of the North South theatre production Canvas & Rum. Well worth experiencing. As a resident of Cornwall it really reminded us that we need to make more time to visit areas a little outside of our usual zone. There is so much going on down here! We handled the ropes, oars, sang, laughed, went below decks and even had a shot of rum! Charlestown has it all, great restaurants and cafes, beautiful beach, walks, harbour, and there is plenty of parking within easy reach.

User

They have to charge for entry to the old harbour as they would be able to pay for staff, maintenance and the like. People who complain about the cafe with no price list should surely have asked the price of things before ordering? We had a lovely 2-3 hours there.

User

The car parking charges are very reasonable. We had to drive round and round a few times but that is to be expected during the holiday season and you don't mind if once parked the price is reasonable. The port itself is quaint and attractive. The cottages are pretty and the beach nice to wander on. We paid to go into the inner harbour and only on the way out did we see the notice board advising the discount for paying for both attractions together. It was turned round so you couldn't see it on the way in. Nevertheless we did find the inner harbour very interesting and well set out. We continued to pay separately to enter the shipwreck and heritage centre and while there is a wealth of information inside we found it overwhelming and even airless and claustrophobic toward the end. We felt that it might be better separated into two parts: that pertaining to the actual harbour and then the other seafaring related artefacts. All in all though it was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and we would recommend it.

User

Spent the whole day here .. museum and old post we found fascinating .. bumbled along the beach , very peaceful and just got lost in the peace and tranquility and the sound of the waves on the pebbles.. plenty of little craft shops and plenty places to eat .. 5*

User

Me, my partner and our 5 year old daughter had a fantastic time when we came down today! We will definitely be coming again

User

Lovely to see a seagull picking at dead crabs within the little picturesque harbour walls.

That said the little town is a lovely place to while away the time with nice pubs and restaurants. Just don't pick the one that doesn't have prices. Believe it or not it isn't "all for free" and you'll get a BIG surprise come paying time.

User

Lovely port the tall boats were anchored up and we sat in a lovely pub at the end of the pier having a beer and excellent food watching waves breaking over the harbour wall, what could be better

User

If you are visiting Cornwall, you need to come and see what is a truly magical place with great things to do.

User

Great place to visit..we are lucky enough to live 15 mins drive away..nice views

User

First timee we have visited and we will certainly be back! Has a lovely feel to the place and as we live in Newquay is an easy day out for us. Loved the quaintness of it there and although peak season was not too busy. Didnt bother with the heritage place as quite long queue

User

Fantastic day! So much to see, do and learn!! Suits most abilities and something to do for all. Fabulous rock pools, beautiful scenery and so much history! Definitely recommend

User

Loved this quaint little place and the old ships in the harbour.

User

Loved the old style ships, the harbour is cool watching the tide go in and out and the are nice walkways out to the rocks or a cliff trail to another beach, some pubs, nice little ships and we got ice cream at the little hut at the roundabout which was very nice! Good visit for a few hours.

User

Great to have a walk and feel all nostalgic. Poldark, Alice in Wonderland, pirates of the Caribbean and many more were partly filmed here.

No dogs on beach which is a shame as many people I spoke to with dogs were annoyed about this. (I have 2 dogs) shipwreck centre is worth a visit if you are into naval history or Cornish history. Views are pretty; houses are pretty and people are pleasant.

User

Enjoyed our visit here. The process of getting in to the museum of shipwrecks etc seemed a bit inefficient but hey ho. I liked the museum on the whole but would have been better if there were not random bits of exhibit like the gas & electricity history & it had been more focused on the local shipwrecks & history of Charlestown which I found most interesting. Too much less relevant things crammed in I felt. Still it was a good visit on a less than good weather day. The harbour & inner harbour were atmospheric & the information well presented on boards through the 12 doors of the town. It was amazing to see how the ships were manoeuvred into the harbour! Was fascinating to read the history & imagine the lives that people lived there.

User

Personally I think it's overpriced. Children go free! Not a lot for little ones to do but good if you like looking into the past. Quaint port to sit and enjoy views out to sea. Only place I got a good phone signal too!
