About Chartered Institute Of Journalists Freelance Division

The CIoJ's Freelance Division is the largest constituent part of the oldest professional association and trade union for journalists in the world.

Chartered Institute Of Journalists Freelance Division Description

The Chartered Institute of Journalists is the oldest professional body and trade union for Journalists in the world.

It is charged by its Royal Charter with protecting and serving those employed in all fields of journalism.

The Institute’s professional side is concerned with the standards and ethics of the profession and the media, the protection of editorial and media freedom, and training, in part through its support for the NCTJ. It also administers a number of charities.

Its trade union section, the IoJ(TU), protects its members’ employment interests and campaigns for better working conditions. This is done through its Professional Practices Board (PPB) which includes members experienced in all fields of journalism.

The Institute's international division has members in more than 30 countries.

The Institute is involved in campaigns on issues affecting journalists and the media, and is regularly consulted by, and gives evidence to, the Government and public bodies.

It has a voice on many media organisations involved in such issues as the protection of journalists covering wars and other dangerous situations, copyright, and the national press card scheme.

It is fiercely non-party political and is not affiliated to the TUC, nor to any other party political organisation.

The president of the Institute is Charlie Harris, who chairs the Institute's ruling body, the Council, which comprises journalists experienced in all fields of the profession.

Our general secretary is Dominic Cooper, who has been with the Institute for many years and is widely respected in the media world.

JOIN US: If editorial work of any kind is your full time or main job, you are eligible for membership. Others with an interest in the media may be eligible to become affiliates, and people studying journalism at university or college can become student members.
