Welcome to the official page of Chequered Past,
Formed from the ashes of THE DETAIL, THE DETOURS, BROKEN EMPIRE and GRANNY SMITH, Chequered Past cover all the classics from The Jam to The Clash, The Specials to The Lambrettas. We also like to pogo a bit so we also play songs by the Dead Kennedys and Feeder!
Who does what and with what:
MATT
Was the guitarist with The Detours and Broken Empire. Plays left handed which means most people can't play his guitars the selfish git.
JAMES
Was the bassist with Broken Empire. Doesn't play left handed but who wants to pick up a bass anyway? Likes foreign lager and spicy Thai.
ANDY
Was the drummer with Sweetcorn, Bite the Penguin and Granny Smith. Counts Stewart Copeland as one of his heroes. . . and can actually play like him too.
ALAN
Was the vocalist with The Detail. Shy, retiring and usually gets the crowd to sing lyrics that he often forgets. Drinks real ale. Please.

We hate cancelling a gig. It sucks. But when your keyboard player is faced with THIS, we had no choice. Apologies to anyone who was going to brave the rain to see us at Viccy Vaults today. The venue are hoping to get a replacement on this afternoon.

What a brilliant night last night. An Irish Centre packed to the rafters to remember John Metcalf. Over £5K(!!) was raised which is a staggering amount of money.
It was an honour to share the stage with our very good friends from BLAG, THE MERCS and ETON RIFLES.
BIG THANKS go to ETON RIFLES for the use of their ridiculously monstrous PA. Thanks too to Dom Bennison for stepping in to do everybody’s sound. The biggest thanks goes to Mark Hickinson for arranging it all. Respec...t.

Two gigs this coming weekend and both we are very much looking forward to.
Saturday night we share the Irish Centre stage with our friends from BLAG, THE MERCS & ETON RIFLES as we all remember John Metcalf who sadly passed away a year ago. John was the vocalist with The Standards, who then became The Detail. And if it wasn’t for The Detail, Chequered Past wouldn’t exist. John was a good man and is missed on the scene.
Sunday we are back at Viccy Vaults in York. It’s an afternoon gig. Doors open at 2. We are on stage at 4. It’s a cracking venue run by two great people. Entry is free. Hope to see you at one or both!

We have no gig this weekend. Why? Because Alan and Jamie are going to see this lot - arguably the best ska punk band going. We even cancelled a booking because they were playing.
It’ll be Alan’s 4th time seeing them and Jamie’s first. And every good ska band on the Yorkshire circuit will be represented here. And rightly fucking so.

Some crackers here at the annual fundraiser last night and more I’m sure to follow from the expert eye of Ian Beck. We won’t tell you the song but I’m sure you’ll have an idea.

So. The morning after Dean Dodder Darwin’s fundraiser last night we have the following to report:
1. He knows how to organise an event. Big respect to that man and everyone else involved in making it a cracking night.
2. The 5:15's are a great bunch of blokes and it was a honour to share the stage with them. Big love to them all, especially to Paddy Tierney for moving our faders and making us sound half decent.
... 3. Jamie is a tad upset with Steve Ruane from the 515s for trying it on with Lorraine. We have proof (see below!)
4. Judging from the feedback and the packed dance floor, the punters seemed to enjoyed it as much as we did.

Matt has recovered from his back issues so our first gig of 2020 is tomorrow! We get to share the stage with our friends from The 5:15's in Rotherham. Oh and it’s sold out. Did we mention that?

It is with regret that due to Matt doing his back in, tonight’s gig at South Lodge has been CANCELLED.
We apologise for the late notice but Matt is having trouble walking. health comes first.
WE ARE BACK!
After a few weeks off recharging the old batteries, we are back on the road with two great gigs:
This Saturday at South Lodge in Ripon. It’s a cracking boozer with a dance floor that bounces (although it’s not actually designed to do that!). Looks like it’s gonna be a busy one.
... Next week we share the stage with our good friends THE 515s at Phoenix Sports Club in Rotherham. That’s gonna be a banger too!
