Update- Vet been ,eye ok (have to watch for infection there too). He’s had antibiotic injection plus left some powders for next few days. He’s heavily sedated so will be woozy for a while. Wounds been cleaned. He’s said any problems ring him and he’ll come and sedate him do we can get cream on. Hopefully it’ll clear up in a couple of days then it’s ‘just’ back to getting g it to heal.
So I’m in France on my jollies and left my sister looking after my 2 sick horses- one had... a minor foot infection which he gets regularly and we usually manage by politicing. The other had an operation to remove some cancer type cells from his eye lids. I left to start my hols with the wounds looking good but as I start my 3 day car journey home, his eye lid has taken a turn for the worse and looks infected 😪. Vet is visiting this morning - fingers crossed he can ease Mintys discomfort and help us get on top of the infection. Hard enough caring for them when they’re sick- horrid being unable to help. He’s in good hands as my sister is also horsey.

I'm branching out - we have a stunning setting here (- I caught last night's visitors gasp 'wow' as they rounded the path to the orchard) and our tiny ponies are adorably cute. Add your child, dressed up if they wish, and we can create some magical memories of their first meeting with a Unicorn. I'm putting on some unicorn photo shoots over the summer holidays and can now offer special unicorn parties. Website is very nearly ready but hop over and like Cheshire Unicorns for some fabulous initial discounts. Mybig horse is back from Horsey hospital- so pleased to have him home.

So one of my big horses is at horsey hospital for the next few days. He has a growth around his eye ( fortunately not affecting the eye itself) and it has to be laser cut out then have brachytherapy to kill any lingering naughty cells. The brachytherapy is a relatively new therapy for horses- it’s used successfully on humans- still being tested on horses. I understand it to be a highly focussed beam of x-rays delivered down what sounds like a metal piping cone (!). We’re ver...y lucky as it’s only currently available at Leahurst Vet school on the Wirral and at Newmarket. The fact that concerned me somewhat was that a general anaesthetic in horses has a risk of death of 1 in 100 .this compares to 1 in 100,000 in humans - I think it’s the recovery phase that’s the issue- horses have very delicate legs- not ideal in a drowsy post op situation. Also they have temperamental stomachs/intestines which can go into spasm which can be lethal. He’s in an excellent hospital at the forefront of equine medicine and Minty’s a tough cookie. All I can do is wait for the post op phone call😩

Emma has been cycling around Europe carrying her ponies to raise funds for working horses and donkeys in appalling conditions in poorer countries. Donation details on her page. The license I hold from the local council ensures my working ponies are well looked after including things like their saddle fits and they’re feeding is appropriate- for mine that means not too much grass!

Skittles' turn to be snapped. Light not quite as good tonight. Trying to get a 5 year old pony to stand still and not eat the very tempting long grass was a bit of a challenge but fortunately he's pretty obliging :)
