This English Heritage site has lots of artefacts from Roman Britain. The fort is well-preserved and it is easy to imagine what the original site looked like.
An excellently maintained English Hertiage site and part of the Hadrians wall tour. Once a Roman Cavalry Station, there is a museum and the remains of a Roman garrison and bath house. Note that much of what is left is now on the foundation level, except for the bath house which remains about shoulder height.
There is a small cafe serving sandwiches, jacket potatoes, pies, soup and salads. Childrens meals and packed lunches are available and there is a limited GF range.
Wonderful site and museum. The best preserved Roman bathroom in Britain is here, as well as a ñn excellent epigraphic collection
A remarkable piece of history. We had Yong children with us who took great enjoyment out of Roly-polying down the well kept slopes :-)
There we some children's activities on offer hosted by English Heritage which engaged our children quite well too.
Amazing! Literally so much to see. Way more than first meets the eye.
A good size gift shop greats you with toilets to one side and a cafe to the other. There is a small museum opposite jam packed full of finds.
You then walk past a couple of fields of horses which is very pleasant, keep an eye out for the information stones to the side of the walkway.
In the following fields are loads of fenced areas with gates containing different parts of the fort that you can walk through and explore.
There is a small section of Hadrian's wall, that is fully fenced, no gate. To be fair this is one of the best places to see Hadrian's Wall as it can be a little disappointing on its own.
By the river is a very good bath house to look at, the river makes a nice picnic spot as a few people were paddling.
I was incredibly impressed.
A lovely fort, with so much to see, a small museum. There is so much that is still to be uncovered. Well worth a visit, a small car park and shop.
Was an interesting place to go could do with a bit more info on the sight
Great if you're into Roman Britain
