About Chickenshed

Chickenshed is a theatre company that brings people together of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to create entertaining and outstanding theatre that celebrates diversity and inspires positive change.

Chickenshed Description

Chickenshed is a company that makes beautiful and inspirational theatre. By bringing together people of all ages and from all backgrounds we produce outstanding theatre that entertains, inspires, challenges and informs both audiences and participants alike. Our vision is a society that celebrates diversity and enables every individual to flourish.

We are a theatre, and so much more besides! We have been performing for over 40 years, and our inclusive creative process is renowned nationally and internationally. Our purpose-built venue plays host to a huge range of productions and activities across the whole year, offering a welcoming, creative hub to the community.

We create in-house productions that take place on our main stage, The Rayne Theatre. We also present regular interactive shows for very young children, new and smaller scale work for adults and families in our intimate Studio Theatre and have a busy programme of live music and comedy events in the Bar.

But that’s not all - we run weekly sessions for our Children’s and Youth Theatre members, Saturday and holiday activity workshops for 5-12s, with performance and singing workshops for adults too.

We also offer a unique opportunity to learn and perform in a working theatre. We run three nationally accredited education courses at Foundation Degree, BTEC and BA level - and are rated 'Outstanding' by OFSTED.

Last week we did not celebrate but lamented the tenth anniversary of our production Crime of the Century. Gang violence is still so prevalent but by reaching out and encouraging meaningful discourse, together we can end knife culture. Thank you to everyone who made it to Chickenshed to engage in this important conversation. Here the is the cast with the brilliant Ashley Walters and Lindsay Coulson who also came to show their solidarity in the fight against social exclusion and knife crime.

Yesterday's Youth Social Exclusion Conference was so insightful - lots of astute conversations and ideas. Looking forward to this afternoon's Social Exclusion and the Future for Inclusion Conference where we'll be opening up the conversation to professionals working with young people.

We're inviting young people age 12-17 who are interested in performing arts to spend an afternoon creating innovative theatre in our unique and inclusive environment. Come along to The Weekend Itch and get a flavour of what it’s like to be a member of our Youth Theatre here at Chickenshed.

This year marks Crime of the Century's 10th anniversary. For one week only, Crime of the Century will return to Chickenshed alongside a Youth Voice Conference and a Social Exclusion Conference. Gang and knife crime remains a huge threat to young people in our cities and beyond; with fatal stabbings reportedly being at the highest since records began in 1946 we believe that this piece of theatre is needed now more than ever and is one that everyone should see.
