About Chislehurst Caves

Welcome to Chislehurst Caves. A most unusual and interesting place in history.
Miles of intersecting tunnels, and thousands of years of history.

Chislehurst Caves Description

Just a short way from central London, close to Bromley in Kent, lay Chislehurst Caves and Café. In spite of the modern trend for hustle and bustle, the Caves and Café are run as a family business, they are not over commercialized. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are all helpful and friendly.
There are approximately 22 miles of dark, mysterious crisscrossing passageways. All hewn by hand from the chalk, forming a maze. They cover more than 6 hectares 65 meters deep, beneath the woodlands and houses of Chislehurst.
So come on a fascinating lamp lit guided journey, and get ready to be amazed! Your whole family can travel back in time. One of the few places left where you actually have your own guide to escort you around, no boring posters on the wall to read here! Things are explained to you, and you can ask questions if you don’t understand something. No two tours are exactly the same, as each of the guides has their own unique style. Your guide takes you on a 45-minute tour and tells stories of the Druids, The Romans, and the Saxons. Hear and see what happened in the caves during The Great War (WW1). See the tunnels that became famous as a shelter during the Second World War.
And if that is not enough, then maybe the extraordinary acoustic properties and spooky atmosphere will do it for you.
Still if more is needed there is always the Amazing Mushroom Growing throughout the 1920, s until 1939. . . . In fact just recently we have started growing mushrooms again for you to see /buy, the first ones grown since then.
You must be satisfied now. . . Ok maybe not, then try this after WW2 the caves became an underground music venue, from the mid 1950’s through to 2001, first for Jazz fans, then Skiffle and later Rock & Roll.
Chislehurst Caves should hold the imagination of even the most easily bored Child or Adult and if nothing else, keep them on their toes. All in all something for everyone, a well rounded tour for all ages.
