Clean Ascent Cio

The idea for Clean Ascent was conceived in 2015 when my best friend James came to stay with me to try and get away from his lifestyle of crack, heroin and alcohol abuse. At the time I was mostly free of my own addictions, having escaped to the Alps a few years previously for the sake of my rapidly deteriorating health, and was fully immersed in rock climbing. James had little choice to but to come out climbing with me on the sea cliffs and Tors of the South West. It quickly become apparent that James's withdrawal symptoms were reduced during stimulation of climbing, and that he slept better after a day outside, tired due to the exercise, and the fear. . . The idea was born and the road to climbing qualifications begun. In 2017 I ran a successful pilot that resulted in two more Climbing Instructors and three ex-addicts. In 2019 Clean Ascent became a Charitably Incorporated Organisation and was awarded start up funding by the National Lottery Community Fund.
