Cleve Rfc Description
Cleve Rugby Football Club was formed in 1922 as “Cleve R. F. C. Downend”. They played their first game in a field in Staple Hill, which is now Staple Hill Park. The club later moved to Vassells Park in Fishponds, the players changing in the back room of the Full Moon Public House. It was at this time that the club became known simply as “Cleve R. F. C”. The club purchased a wooden pavilion in November 1934 for £200. When Cleve were forced to move to Bromley Heath Road in Downend in 1939, because of a housing development, their wooden pavilion went with them.
In 1947 further land was purchased and was farmed by club members, as a source of income. Eventually, to meet the growing local interest in rugby football, more pitches were developed. Then, between 1969 and 1971, members added more facilities, which carried the club through the next 25 years.
The club badge is based of the coat of arms of the Cave Estate, from whom the ground in Downend was purchased and the ears of wheat acknowledge the club’s farming activity after the War. The club motto ‘We sow to reap’ also records these early events but also reflects the club’s commitment to providing rugby facilities and coaching for children from the age of 6.
The next milestone in Cleve’s history was the club’s move to its new clubhouse and grounds ‘The Hayfields’in September 1997. The club runs 3 senior sides on Saturdays and all mini and junior levels, from under 7’s to colts on Sundays. There is within the club, a loyal membership and very social atmosphere.
At Cleve we are committed to providing a centre of excellence for the playing of rugby football, whilst further enhancing the unique spirit of friendship at the club. In doing so, we seek to provide the local community with a focal point for rugby and other sporting and social activities, for the enjoyment of all involved.
Reviews
Cleve RFC has a Room to rent (previously used as a physio room so suitable for similar usage) with electricity, water, broadband connection and natural light. Can be re-decorated to suit tenant. Furnishing can be negotiated.

Wasnt aware this great club was so close to me. It has real community family feel run by people who actually enjoy the atmosphere and welcoming in New supporters � My first time courtesy of Nick Barrow, Icon and I can't wait to return next season ��� Thank you
This is a great club, been attending for a long time.Its staff are very welcoming and polite and the club has a great family feel throughout all age groups. The club also holds parties and other events.
Thankyou for hosting my wedding reception on 2nd June 2018 we loved it the place looked stunning and the food was delicious �
Played nearly all my rugby at Cleve from youth captain to senior captain. Amazing place with warm welcoming staff. Also had the pressure to coach and Dj there when privately booked. Great grounds and facilities. What more could you want people. Get down there
Hired the hall for a fundraiser. Facilities were perfect. Catering and bar service was amazing and very reasonably priced, will definitely be booking again and recommend to friends
Great club ,chairman looked after our boys on tour from Betws Wales last week big thanks, as wires crossed and they didn’t know the boys were coming,
Excellent club with a real community feel to it. The clubs keeps hundreds of children 6-19 engaged in sports with many of the staff, coaches and committee working hard as volunteers. Also able to host parties, weddings and other functions to a high standard! Always welcoming new members! Highly recommend!
Cleve rfc is a beautiful place and has some amazing grounds! The staff are amazing and do everything they can to help and provide the best service! I’ve had a few functions here and been to a few and I couldn’t fault them in anyway! An amazing place to host any sort of party! They do weddings and funerals also! They can accommodate to any sort of event you would like! An amazing place!
Been too Club dinners, parties, weddings and funerals. Family friendly and some amazing staff and club members always been a pleasurable club to be with.
Attended for weddings, party’s, rugby matches, festivals and even amazing firework displays. Overall great club and very welcoming bar staff. Great clubhouse and great facilities for anyone interested in rugby!
Would 100% recommend to anyone.
Attended a number of events at Cleve Rfc, great staff and management.
Amazing club! Phenomenal atmosphere, such a huge family bond with everyone involved with the club. Been to parties here and held parties myself, couldn’t doubt my experience! Such a great club. Xx
This would be 5 * but the toilet situation was pretty Grim. Why would a club who hosts events for hundreds of people only have 2 toilets? The floors were flooded and dirty. Other than that a lovely clubhouse and great grounds. Friendly staff and fair prices.
Hired Cleve for our wedding.Staff and food were excellent however the DJ that was recommended was awful to the point we requested a refund for his services.
Great 80s night. Fab atmosphere. Bar a bit unorganized at times. Would recommend for a local night out.
Fabulous 80s night with brilliant music and videos. Great atmosphere so would recommend for a good night out but need more bar staff for an event like this.
Hired the hall for my husbands 40th . Was told we could decorate at 17.00 arrived to a hall full of people eating which were then ushered iut so we could decorate. During the evening had a queue from the bar to the door as only 1 staff member serving , took one of our guest to ask for a manager to get more staff on. On the whol quite dissapointing !
Went to a Christmas meal here, it was terrible! When food come out it was cold, it got sent back twice and when come back out i was given someone elses plate as it had Cranberry sauce on and i didnt have it on mine! Burnt my thumb on an extremely hot plate but food was still cold. Really wouldnt recommend this place to anyone !!!
