The Grand Tour in Venice focuses on the many different visitors and residents of Venice over a three-hundred-year period. In the eighteenth-century, travellers were attracted by the Venetian music, pageantry and art. You can follow in their footsteps and explore the places they visited and the sights they saw in our publication or by going to the link www.thegrandtourinvenice.com

Paris Bordon (1500 - 1571) excelled in ambitious and highly detailed architectural settings for the backgrounds of some of his compositions. Portrait of a Young Woman can be dated to the artist’s maturity, 1540 - 1550, the artist’s style during this period is defined by the figure appearing to be embedded within the architecture.

Despite the passing of time, Venice has very much remained the same, unharmed by the great changes of history. We are forever in awe of its exquisite beauty.

Peggy Guggenheim, one of the greatest Grand Tourists of the XX century, once stated:
“It is always assumed that Venice is the ideal place for a honeymoon. This is a grave error. To live in Venice or even to visit it means that you fall in love with the city itself. There is nothing left over in your heart for anyone else.”

This intricate terracotta Character Head is by the Italian Neoclassical sculptor, Antonio Canova (1757 – 1822). It constitutes a rare and fascinating addition to the corpus of his early production and is representative of the sculptor’s seminal period before he moved from Venice to Rome.

The Abbazia di San Gregorio is located at the entrance of the Grand Canal, next to the Santa Maria della Salute, in an area of Venice occupied by the works of eminent artists. It is now set in a part of the city called "the kilometre of art" due to its proximity to other important Venetian museums and galleries.

The artworks which we have chosen to exhibit at the Abbazia di San Gregorio are works which have belonged to Grand Tourists. This Benedetto Boschetti oil lamp is made from giallo antico marble which was one of the favourite materials of the ancient Romans.
Boschetti’s workshop was situated in the heart of Rome, at 74 Via Condotti. It was famous amongst his contemporaries for the exceptional quality of its works in coloured marble which were highly sought after by the ever-growing number of travellers visiting Rome as part of their Grand Tour.

No painter of the 17thC was able to render skin and flesh as convincingly as Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652). Aesop perfectly demonstrates the pictorial technique for which Ribera was celebrated in his own time and indeed the years since, and which manifests itself most evidently in the depiction of the skin. Ribera's striking handling of the paint and his decision to favour intense realism over idealisation imbues Aesop with a sense of grandeur and dignity. Also typical of Ribe...ra is the directness wich which Aesop, staring resolutely out at the viewer, is depicted. One notes the sense of naturalism in the deeply sculptural folds of the philosopher's tattered garment, as well as peeling pages of the half-open book at the lower left. Ribera carefully depicted each philosopher as a specific individual, eschewing the classical robes previously favoured in the pictorial representation of philosophers. The verse 'Povera, e nuda, vai filosofia' (Poor and nude, thou goest, Philosophy) was cited in the artists manual the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa, published in Rome 1603. @jorge.coll @colnaghi1760 For appointments please email us at thegrandtour@collcortes.com #avanticolnaghi #desire #beauty #abbaziasangregorio #colnaghigrandtour #colnaghi #chahan #venice #biennaledivenezia #oldmaster #oldmasterrocks #sexyart #chahanxcolnaghi #abbaziasangregorio #colnaghi #chahan #venice #oldmaster #chahancolnaghigrandtour2019 #design #venetianart #lifestyle #lifestyleexperience #experience #chahangallery #colnaghifoundation #venicebiennale #biennalearte2019 #art #ribera #aesop #philosopher @ Venezia, Italia

Vanitas is the term for artworks on the theme of the fragility of men and his desires in the face of death. Mediation on the theme Vanitas preoccupied Italian Baroque paintings and sculptures, but the obsession with death and decay was already widespread in the fifteenth century as it was in Roman times. This marble bust treats the theme in a witty manner depicting death itself - represented as a skull - dressed as a gentleman in a long wig, armour and mantle. The word vanita...s is Latin for "empty". In the Medieval and Early Modern periods, skulls and skeletons expressed most directly the concept of "momento mori" and expression reminding victorious Roman generals that they were too mortal. Given the popularity of vanitas pieces, this piece was most likely produced in one of the important Roman workshops for discerning collectors.

Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) was only fifteen or sixteen at the time when he painted this veduta, which demonstrates his precocious brilliance as a painter. From a remarkably early age, Bellotto reworked compositions devised by his uncle, Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697-1698). This view of San Marco is taken from a point in the Bacino di San Marco, near the Riva degli Schiavoni. The building in sight is the Dodge’s Palace and it was the heart of the politica...l life and public administration of the Venetian Republic La Serenissima. In the 10th century, the building was partially destroyed by a fire, and subsequent reconstruction works were undertaken at the behest of Doge Sebastiano Ziani (1172-1178). The wing towards the San Marco’s Basilca is the oldest, dating back to 1340. In this veduta Bellotto depicts the wing of the Palazzo Ducale which faces towards San Marco which was built between 1483 and 1565. Come and view this marvellous work and many other vedute at the Abbazia di San Gregorio!
