Colne Valley Mountain Bike Challenge Description

Since the event’s first inception in 2004 we have striven to adapt our route to try and incorporate as much legal off-road riding as we possibly can. Over the intervening years our commitment has paid off handsomely as we have continued to develop the route and have secured access to several additional sections. These sections provide some added variety for our returning participants and complement the rest of the route nicely. As a bonus, one of the original, evil tarmac climbs has bitten the dust!

The 30 mile route is a mixture of demanding off road terrain, local roads and lanes, set around the picturesque, post-industrial countryside of the Colne Valley in Huddersfield.

The course travels through the heart of the 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'Where the Heart Is' country. The event is open to anyone aged 12 or over, however under 16s must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult. Riders of all abilities are welcomed, but are reminded that although this is primarily a fun event, the course is challenging.

This is a fundraising event in support of the 39th Parkwood Scout Group and Leymoor Cricket Club, Golcar.

16 years ago I had an idea: to create and organise a cycling event - and thus the Colne Valley Mountain Bike Challenge (CVMBC) was born. It was first run in 2004 and has been an astounding success. Earlier this year, I had another idea: to create and organise a running event - and thus the Colne Valley 10k Challenge (CV10KC) was born. This weekend (Sunday 23rd June @ 10.00am) will be the inaugural running of the new event. In order to make the new project equally as successf...ul I could really do with a little help from my mates please. If anyone can spare me just an hour of their time to stand on a corner and make sure everyone navigates the route safely I'd be really, really grateful. It's nowhere near as big an undertaking as the CVMBC, with the route only covering parts of Longwood, Longwood Edge, Outlane, Scape and Golcar, so travelling will be negligible. We'll even ply you with warm drinks and biscuits! Please contact me if you'd like to help out. Many thanks.

Just a quick note to say that the 2019 finishing times are on the website now - www.cvmbc.co.uk - and that the official event photos are also available from Simon Morley's website too - http://www.morleyphotography.com/. Select the 'View pictures/Buy Vouchers' option at the bottom and the CVMBC album is contained within. Cheers.

It is with great regret that I have to inform everyone that the gentleman who was taken seriously ill with a cardiac arrest after the event on Sunday sadly passed away in hospital. Apparently he never regained consciousness and, despite remedial surgery, he suffered a further arrest and drifted away at around 11.00pm on Sunday night. Ken Witham was 62 years old, but loved adventure and a challenge. He had recently beaten cancer into remission and was keen to get back to peak... fitness and resume the outdoor activities that he loved so much. Ken's family told me that he was a deeply private person, but very generous of nature, often helping charities local to his home in Rugeley, Staffordshire. It is some comfort to them that Ken passed away doing one of the activities that he loved so much. The family would like to pass on their heartfelt gratitude for all the help he received and the tireless efforts of those that performed CPR to keep him going until the medical professionals could stabilise him enough ready for the airlift to hospital. All at the CVMBC pass on our deepest condolences to Ken's family following such a tragic turn of events at the weekend. Rest in Peace Mr Whitham.
