With lockdown measures severely restricting visitation, many older people have been separated from their families and friends for the foreseeable future. While necessary, this step has increased levels of isolation, fear and loneliness throughout the country's 11, 000 care homes. This crisis of communication is at the heart of the Connectforce mission. This was already a problem. According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone. Over a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. Since the pandemic, however, many have lost contact with the outside world all together, especially for those without the technology or experience to make regular calls. And we have heard first-hand how damaging a lack of contact is. Not to mention the pressure it puts on care-givers who are left to bridge the gaps between separated family members. Our aim is to restore communication between this generation and their loved ones. We are doing this by providing care homes with electronic tablets: the best alternative to face to face connection. These simple devices, which many of us take for granted, will give residents the freedom to video call their families and friends. This simple donation can be a life changing one for the residents and their loved ones. One which will also provide respite for the dedicated carers who have been working tirelessly on the front-line, often having to use their personal phones and devices to allow residents in their care to speak to families. Some of us have never felt further apart, but we believe, with your support, this crisis can bring us closer together than ever. In this moment of distance, let's invest in connection.
