ALANEntry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 (QCF) (FLT)What is ALAN?Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy qualifications sit under the Skills for Life umbrella. Often referred to as Adult Basic Skills, they can be taken by learners of any age. They are nationally recognised, stand alone qualifications that enable learners to gain the basic key skills they require in English and Mathematics. Instructors whose learners have taken the ALAN qualifications have reported an increase in confidence both in engagement with GCSE English and Mathematics and with the challenges of GCSE study in general. ALAN works at all levels as it can encourage learners uninterested in GCSE studies, enable Year 9 students who are ready to take a big qualification early and help adults to achieve a qualification they need to perform in the workplace. This qualification can be achieved whilst working on the COOL Lancashire vocational programmes or as a stand alone qualification. Assessment and On-screen testingALAN tests are on-screen and on-demand at Level 1 and Level 2 and for Numeracy and Reading at Entry Level 3. All tests follow the same assessment design whereby each qualification is a single, on-screen test. All tests are also available for paper-based assessment.
